LeBron James is the all-time leading scorer in the NBA and one of the two best players to ever play the game.
He is also now a complete and total golf sicko.
James is a late-comer to the game of golf, picking it up when he turned 40 so that he could take on a new challenge in life. The beautiful thing about golf is that it’s a sport that James can play for the rest of his life, unlike the NBA where he will look to win one more championship after surprisingly joining the Philadelphia 76ers.
But as much as James is focused on contending for one more ring, his love of golf has taken on a life of its own recently. And incredibly, that includes the launch of his own YouTube golf channel. The first video is a scramble event featuring James’ teammates from the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers championship team celebrating their 10-year anniversary at Castle Stuart Golf Links at Cabot Highlands.
It is a full-length production featuring all the hallmarks of an elite golf YouTube production. There are chyrons, shot tracers, multiple cameras, and even footage off the course of the players reminiscing about their time together.
YouTube golf has taken on a life of its own as a content genre. Major winner Bryson DeChambeau has even considered moving into content creation full-time if LIV Golf fully collapses and he doesn’t want to return to the PGA Tour. Personalities and channels like Rick Shiels, Grant Horvat, GM Golf, and Good Good have millions of followers. That’s not to mention the scores of other popular people and outlets like No Laying Up, Fore Play, Paige Spiranac, and the Bryan Bros. that have huge followings as well. The PGA Tour has even loosened its own social media policies and encouraged its own players to step out of their shells to take advantage of the wave of attention towards the game. The tour even partnered on its own Creator Classic.
But as popular as all of the golf influencers on the YouTube stage currently are, none of them is LeBron James. If he’s serious about this endeavor and golf is truly his next big enterprise, he could bring an entirely new fandom to the game. He told Golf.com’s Dylan Dethier that the channel will capture his journey with golf and his love for the game.
“I hope people will come along for the ride and just feel the sense of joy and all the fun we’re having out there,” James said. “This is about my journey of falling in love with golf and you’ll see the good, the bad and the ugly. It’s a steep learning curve, but I’m loving every bit of it.”
Fans of the Philadelphia 76ers might wonder about the new channel, but James has always had outside interests as he has expanded his portfolio, having his own production company for a number of years. It’s going to be good for James as it will show a much more personable and relatable side. And the possibilities for guests and collaborations are endless. There’s also the bonus that seeing one of the greatest athletes of his generation try out a brand new sport and take people along for the ride could be one of the most interesting journeys in all of content creation.
