The exposure of Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini’s alleged relationship has had direct consequences for both parties. While the veteran reporter had to step down from her position at The Athletic, the New England Patriots head coach missed the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft to enter counseling.

But the repercussions of their alleged affair might haunt them for a long time. Without her connection to one of the biggest names in the sport, there have been genuine questions about Russini’s viability as a reporter. But one person sees it as an unfair double standard.

Mike Vrabel Has a Challenge Ahead of Him

The entire story began with pictures of them getting leaked from a resort in Arizona. From there, the internet went down the rabbit hole, bringing back past interviews and errant comments to join the dots about them.

However, media coverage remained at a minimum around the two, particularly from major networks. As a result, they weren’t under a constant spotlight. But that did not equate to a lack of consequences for both of them.

Aside from counseling, Vrabel also admitted to some tough conversations with his family and the Patriots organization. But the challenge for the former three-time Super Bowl champion is only getting started.

Tony Farmer, who has followed the entire story closely, pointed out an interesting double standard.

In a post on X, he wrote, “A lot of attention has been given to the idea that Mike Vrabel was giving Dianna Russini information to report.”

However, he believed it might not be a one-way street. “But what about the idea that Dianna Russini may have been giving Mike Vrabel? Imagine what a resource a connection like that could be for a coach,” Farmer added.

As a result, he theorized what the end product could look like for the Patriots during the 2026 campaign by saying, “Let’s see how Mike does without Dianna Russini in league circles this year.”

So far, though, the returns aren’t too shabby.

A strong offseason, where they added superstar wide receiver A.J. Brown, was a home run. But the first game of the preseason was a mixed bag. With the Indianapolis Colts also resting their starters, the two sides went to a 13-13 tie.

It remains to be seen whether Farmer’s worry is justified. But after winning Coach of the Year and transforming the Patriots last year, he might have the benefit of the doubt from the organization and the fan base as well.
