Lionel Messi Returns Days After Father’s Death as Inter Miami Exit Leagues Cup

Lionel Messi returned to competitive action for Inter Miami on Wednesday, just four days after the death of his father, Jorge Messi, at the age of 68 in Rosario, Argentina.

Messi entered at halftime of Miami’s 3-2 defeat to Club León, a result that eliminated the club from the Leagues Cup in the group stage.

His appearance came only hours after he published an emotional farewell to his father on social media, revealing serious doubts about how much longer he will continue playing.

The timeline compressed profound grief and professional competition into a matter of days.

Jorge Messi died at a Rosario hospital early Saturday. Lionel subsequently traveled to Argentina and attended a private funeral before making an unexpected return to the United States ahead of Wednesday’s game.

He had missed Miami’s previous match, a 2-1 defeat to Monterrey, and was not expected to be available against León.

Why Messi’s return carried more weight than a typical Leagues Cup appearance

The significance of Messi’s return extended far beyond the demands of a group-stage match.

In his farewell message, the Argentine wrote that he did not know how he would continue without his father. He also acknowledged doubts over how much longer he would keep playing football.

Those comments transformed what would ordinarily have been a routine comeback into a moment carrying possible implications for his future at Inter Miami.

Messi’s decision to play also underlined his commitment to a team facing elimination, despite the grief, travel and disruption of the previous few days.

His contribution was limited to 45 minutes, but he remained heavily involved. Messi created four chances and registered three shots on target as Miami pushed unsuccessfully for a result.

The performance suggested fitness was not the main reason for bringing him on at halftime. His presence carried emotional and symbolic importance alongside the tactical need.

What the Leagues Cup exit means for Miami

The defeat left Inter Miami with one victory and two losses in the group stage.

It is the first time since Messi joined the club in 2023 that Miami has failed to reach the Leagues Cup knockout rounds.

Elimination removes one competition from an already congested schedule and shifts the club’s attention entirely toward the MLS Supporters’ Shield race.

Miami sits two points behind Nashville SC ahead of the teams’ meeting at GEODIS Park. A victory would move Inter Miami above Nashville and into first place in the standings.

The match will also offer a clearer indication of Messi’s immediate availability.

Playing for 45 minutes against León was one thing. Managing a full MLS match after an emotionally and physically exhausting week would represent a considerably greater demand.

How head coach Guillermo Hoyos handles Messi’s minutes against Nashville — and over the following weeks — could reveal whether the club views his comments about retirement as an immediate expression of grief or something that must be considered in its longer-term planning.
