Liverpool can strike one rumoured transfer target off their wish list after gutting injury blow

One reported Liverpool transfer target has seen any hope of a move to Anfield put on hold after suffering a gutting injury setback.

The Reds’ pursuit of wide attacking reinforcements this summer has been extensively documented, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola the big name on everyone’s lips and his teammate Ibrahim Mbaye also under strong consideration.

According to TEAMtalk, Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh has been considered as an alternative to the PSG duo, but the £70m-rated Gambia international won’t be pursued any further for the remainder of this transfer window.

Minteh set for 2-3 months out with injury

As per The Athletic, the Seagulls expect to be without their winger for the next two to three months after he suffered a nasty leg injury in their 3-0 victory at home to Roma last weekend.

It remains unclear if the 22-year-old will require surgery, with the body blow incurred as he went to challenge Bryan Cristante for the ball early in the second half.

That setback for Minteh means that Brighton are now without both of their first-choice wingers, with Kaoru Mitoma still recovering from the hamstring issue which ruled him out of the World Cup earlier this summer.

We wish Minteh well after gutting injury setback

First and foremost, our thoughts are with the Gambia forward after that gutting injury blow, and we wish him a swift and full recovery.

It’s uncertain whether Liverpool would’ve actively pursued the 22-year-old this month even if he hadn’t had that setback, with Richard Hughes’ efforts seemingly focused on trying to land Barcola and/or Mbaye.

Minteh mightn’t be the most prolific of wingers, having scored just nine times in 66 Premier League outings, but he’s been a delight to watch during his time in English football, standing out for what his head coach Fabian Hurzeler deemed his ‘unpredictable‘ nature in the final third of the pitch.

The Anfield hierarchy could potentially revisit their interest in the Gambian once he returns from injury in the autumn, depending on how Andoni Iraola is faring for wide attackers and whether or not there’s a big-money addition from PSG in the meantime.
