Liverpool FC has new minority stakeholders including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, majority owners Fenway Sports Group confirmed Friday, August 14. The tech billionaires are part of a consortium led by Amit Bhatia, who previously owned London club Queens Park Rangers. This is the first known investment in a sports team by Bezos, who Forbes lists as the third richest person in the world, with a net worth of more than $270 billion. "The strategic investment supports Liverpool F.C.’s long-term growth ambitions by bringing together experts from across global business, technology, and investment," read FSG's statement. "The consortium partners will work with FSG and the club’s leadership team to evaluate opportunities that enhance the club’s objectives on and off the pitch. FSG continues to retain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool F.C."
FSG bought Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million. The BBC reported the current deal values the club between £5bn and £6bn. The size of the investment from the consortium was not disclosed but multiple reports in the UK indicated it will make up one-third of the club. In 2023, FSG sold a three percent stake to a group called Dynasty Equity. The deal is not expected to have major implications on Liverpool on the field in the short-term. After winning the Premier League in 2024-25, the Reds struggled to reach the same heights. The club bid farewell to Arne Slot as manager and have brought in Andoni Iraola to improve on last season's fifth-place finish and quarterfinal exit in the UEFA Champions League.
