Liverpool have taken a giant step forward to agreeing a massive Premier League transfer.

While most of the attention this summer has been on who Liverpool are trying to bring in, the players who could leave are also just as fascinating, and concerning for supporters.

The Reds have already said goodbye to some seriously important figures. Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah were not only key players on the pitch, but also big personalities around the dressing room.

These are players who have been there, done it and won pretty much everything. They know what it takes to play for Liverpool, deal with the pressure and perform at the highest level. For the younger players coming through, having those kinds of characters around them is hugely valuable.

Now, Liverpool could be about to lose even more experience.

Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister have attracted the attention of rivals clubs. The former is more likely to leave than the latter. Cody Gakpo is also of interest.

The Dutchman is another Premier League winner and has become an important part of the squad since arriving at Anfield.

However, there is a growing feeling that Liverpool would be prepared to listen if a serious offer comes in.

It's all a game of dominoes at this point.

Liverpool's interest in both Ibrahim Mbaye and Bradley Barcola could be linked directly to Gakpo's situation.

If they can bring in two more attacking options, suddenly there is much more depth in the forward areas and Liverpool have greater freedom to consider selling the Dutchman.

It would still be a significant decision.

Gakpo has plenty of experience, knows the club and can play in several positions. Letting him go would mean losing another player who understands what it takes to win trophies with Liverpool.

But if the club believe Barcola and Mbaye can provide the pace, creativity and unpredictability that Andoni Iraola wants, they may decide that the time is right for a change.

Tottenham are interested in Gakpo and, given the current situation, it would not be a huge surprise to see him playing in north London before the window closes.

For Liverpool, though, they have to prioritise themselves first. If Gakpo goes, the replacements have to be ready.

They cannot afford to lose another senior attacking player without having the quality coming through the door. The squad has already changed dramatically this summer, and another major departure would make Iraola's job even more difficult.

Liverpool need to make sure the players leaving are being replaced properly. Otherwise, what started as a squad rebuild could quickly turn into a situation where they are simply creating more problems than they solve.

That is looking like something they are going to be able to achieve now. With PSG bringing in a myriad of attackers, Bradley Barcola is increasingly likely to join Liverpool.

And in the process it looks like Liverpool themselves have taken a giant step forward to agree a deal with Tottenham over Gakpo.

Journalist Rik Elfrink reports that Liverpool are now willing to go along with Gakpo's desire to join Tottenham.

This is a significant change in direction. It's a giant leap forward. All summer Liverpool have insisted they do not want to sell Gakpo.

But now they are willing to go along with it.

This massive deal over two Premier League rivals won't be cheap of course. We're talking £70m at the very least. However, it's a move that is very much possible at this stage.

In fact, you have to say based on all the movement, it's not only possible but likely.
