GREENSBORO – Wesleyan Christian shut out Southwest Guilford 7-0 in the Beyond Sports Fusion boys' soccer showcase Thursday at Bryan Park. Ty Larson scored four goals, while Sam Souza, Luke Little and Finley Rosser each scored one for the Trojans. Anthony Penaloza, Kaleb Lambeth, Clyde Bryant, Rylan Moody and Kiser each had an assist. Sam Lester earned the shutout in goal. Both teams will play Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bryan Park. Wesleyan (1-0) will face Ragsdale, while the Cowboys (0-1) will take on Northwest Guilford. HIGH POINT UNIVERSITYWOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO UNCG 1-0 HIGH POINT – High Point University opened its season with a 1-0 loss against Triad rival UNCG in nonconference women's soccer Thursday at Vert Stadium. The Spartans scored the lone goal of the match on a high shot in the 35th minute. UNCG finished with a 17-13 edge in shots (6-4 on goal), while the Panthers held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. Kylee Williams (two saves) and Nylah Mirshafiei (three saves) split time in goal. HIGH POINT ROCKERSEARLY OUTBURST KEYS WIN HIGH POINT – The High Point Rockers scored the first five runs of the game – including three over the first two innings – in beating the Gastonia Ghost Peppers 5-3 in Atlantic League baseball Thursday at Truist Point. Aidan Brewer, who homered, and Ivan Melendez each had two hits and an RBI for the Rockers (46-53 overall, 17-19 second half). Luke Napleton also had two hits, while Hogan Windish doubled and drove in two. Sam Ryan earned the pitching win, striking out eight in seven shutout innings.
