LOCAL ROUNDUP: Wesleyan beats Southwest in soccer showcase

GREENSBORO – Wesleyan Christian shut out Southwest Guilford 7-0 in the Beyond Sports Fusion boys' soccer showcase Thursday at Bryan Park. Ty Larson scored four goals, while Sam Souza, Luke Little and Finley Rosser each scored one for the Trojans. Anthony Penaloza, Kaleb Lambeth, Clyde Bryant, Rylan Moody and Kiser each had an assist. Sam Lester earned the shutout in goal. Both teams will play Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bryan Park. Wesleyan (1-0) will face Ragsdale, while the Cowboys (0-1) will take on Northwest Guilford. EAST DAVIDSON, EASTERN RANDOLPH THOMASVILLE – East Davidson rolled past Eastern Randolph 6-0 in nonconference boys' soccer Thursday at Brown Middle. Noah Vinson had two goals and an assist for the Golden Eagles (2-0). Brayden Siler added a goal, while Carlos Estrada Morales had an assist. Connor Fouts made three saves and Valetino Robles made one save in goal. LEDFORD, MOUNT TABOR WINSTON-SALEM – Ledford lost 6-0 against Mount Tabor in nonconference boys' soccer Thursday at Mount Tabor. The Panthers opened their season 0-1. The Golden Eagles improved to 2-1 overall. LEDFORD, FORBUSH EAST BEND – Ledford lost 25-14, 25-20, 25-16 against Forbush in nonconference girls volleyball Thursday at Forbush. The Panthers moved to 1-1. TRINITY, MOUNT AIRY TRINITY – Trinity defeated Mount Airy 25-19, 25-20, 25-17 in nonconference girls' volleyball Thursday at Trinity. Dakota Odell had eight kills to lead the Bulldogs (2-0). Addison McCoy added three kills and 18 service points, while Avalynn Johnson had 19 assists and 10 service points. Cadence Mortensen had 17 service points, and Bryn Holden had 13. HIGH POINT UNIVERSITYWOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO UNCG 1-0 HIGH POINT – High Point University opened its season with a 1-0 loss against Triad rival UNCG in nonconference women's soccer Thursday at Vert Stadium. The Spartans scored the lone goal of the match on a high shot in the 35th minute. UNCG finished with a 17-13 edge in shots (6-4 on goal), while the Panthers held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. Kylee Williams (two saves) and Nylah Mirshafiei (three saves) split time in goal. HIGH POINT ROCKERSEARLY OUTBURST KEYS WIN HIGH POINT – The High Point Rockers scored the first five runs of the game – including three over the first two innings – in beating the Gastonia Ghost Peppers 5-3 in Atlantic League baseball Thursday at Truist Point. Aidan Brewer, who homered, and Ivan Melendez each had two hits and an RBI for the Rockers (46-53 overall, 17-19 second half). Luke Napleton also had two hits, while Hogan Windish doubled and drove in two. Sam Ryan earned the pitching win, striking out eight in seven shutout innings.
