The Dallas Cowboys clearly just wanted rookie Caleb Downs to get his feet wet on Saturday night. The No. 11 overall selection was able to make his professional debut in Seattle, lining up for parts of the first series of the game. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer has made it clear over his first one-plus seasons at the helm, that he would rather err on the side of caution when it comes to preseason play of players who are integral to the regular season. Still, no one would want a rookie to take his first ever pro snaps in a regular season game, so Downs saw some action in Dallas' 17-7 win over the Seahawks on Saturday night. It was only seven snaps on defense, none on special teams, and even the seven was truncated as Seattle's opening drive took 13 plays.
Caleb Downs Every Snap From His NFL Debut https://t.co/CBteA2sJUEpic.twitter.com/pJ9dKLT8PC — Football Performances (@NFLPerformances) August 16, 2026 As seen in the clip above, Downs did not register a single stat from his outing. He lined up in the slot, where most assume he could spend the majority of his time this season as new defensive coordinator Chirstian Parker rolls out a three-safety look, just once. His other six snaps were all from the free safety spot. Five of those snaps came from a split-safety look, with just one as a single-high centerfielder. Downs is in the conversation to wear the green dot for Parker's defense; and even if he doesn't the fact he remains in that conversation shows just how heady of a player the Ohio State product is. Teammates and coaches have raved about his football acumen since he arrived in late April, and fans should be excited to see just how much is heaped on his plate this season.
