There have been many intriguing stories around the NFL this summer. However, one that has drawn a lot of attention is Los Angeles Rams legend Aaron Donald ending his retirement after three years and possibly returning to the field in 2026.

Donald is a rarity in that he chose to retire at only 32 years old. Leaving a lot of gas in the tank if the NFL itch ever returns. Well, it came this year, and it is no surprise why. The Rams are a heavy favorite to get to the Super Bowl early next year after adding defensive stars Myles Garrett and Trent McDuffie to a team that reached the NFC Championship Game last season.

The 10-time Pro Bowler just turned 35 years old in May, so now seems like his last chance to make another run at an NFL title before his window to still play at an elite level closes. After it was confirmed that Donald would be at the team’s facilities this summer to test his body and see if he is up for a comeback, he and the team have been very cautious. Neither side has given the idea that a return is assured.

Recent reports claimed Donald and the Rams set a deadline for a final decision as they begin their preseason schedule. First, it was expected to be early this week. Then it shifted to Friday. We are now on Saturday, and no decision has come down yet. However, the real question shouldn’t be when a decision will come, but why does one need to be made any time soon?

Los Angeles Rams and Aaron Donald shouldn’t worry about a return decision deadline

After two years away from the NFL, Donald clearly wants back in. If he were unsure, he would not go through this process. But he had a legendary career and likely cares about his legacy in the league and with the Rams. He does not want to return to the field unless he can make a difference and perform like the superstar he was throughout his career.

Furthermore, he chose to walk away from the sport in his prime because of its brutality. Donald also wants to make sure his body can hold up to the rigors of a 17-game season at 35 years old. But he doesn’t need to. He just needs to play in enough games to stay sharp and be ready once the playoffs roll around.

That is why he and the Rams should throw the idea of a decision deadline out the window. If Donald needs until October to get to where he needs to be physically, then no problem. If he needs all the way into November, fine. Super Bowl opportunities don’t come around often. LA has a great chance to compete for one early next year. Adding Donald to the mix only bolsters those chances.

Like a fine wine or a delectable dish, good things take time. Donald joining the Rams for the 2026 season is a very good thing. So there is no reason to rush things. Let him hang around with the team for as long as he wants and slowly get himself back to being a superstar. Because the combination of Donald and Garrett this year will be a delicious feast for the eyes.
