Ludvig Aberg is one of Scottie Scheffler’s closest challengers with 36 holes left to play at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Scheffler was in scintillating form on Friday at the FedEx St. Jude as he fired a round of nine-under par 61.

Aberg’s round of 65 was made to look rather ordinary by the 30-year-old world number one’s brilliance.

Scottie Scheffler is 11-under par after two rounds of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and he holds a three-stroke lead over Sungjae Im and Viktor Hovland, with Ludvig Aberg a further shot back.

Worryingly for his rivals, Scheffler’s second-round 61 at the FedEx St. Jude could have been even better if it wasn’t for two sloppy bogeys.

So, does Aberg think he can catch the world number one in Memphis this weekend?

Aberg spoke to reporters after he finished his second round at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

The two-time PGA Tour winner was asked how chasing a player like Scheffler will affect him mentally over the weekend.

“You know he’s not going to let up,“ the Swede replied.

“We almost expect him to play this way all the time, which is maybe a little bit unfair on him, but that’s the way he’s built this for himself.

“Yeah, obviously he’s a remarkable player, and what he’s done the last couple years is nothing short of spectacular. But if I can focus on myself over the weekend and see what I can do, I think that’s all in my power.“

Aberg was asked whether he was pleased with his performance at TPC Southwind on Friday on the whole.

“Yeah, I think so. It was very positive,“ he replied.

“I thought overall I was hitting it much better than yesterday. I thought yesterday was a little bit scrappy and missing fairways and missing greens, but managed it quite well.

“And then I came out today hitting a lot of good shots and a lot of good — iron play was good today. Overall pleased with that.“

Ludvig Aberg will need to play some seriously good golf this weekend at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, if he is to have any chance of pipping Scottie Scheffler to the title.

The thing is, even if the 26-year-old Swede does play his very best golf, that still might not be enough.
