Lunney talks offensive line, quarterback and more at midway point of Illini fall camp

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) - Illinois football's offensive coordinator, Barry Lunney Jr., met with reporters on Monday as the Illini begin their third week of fall training camp. Lunney is heading into his fifth seasons as OC for Illinois. He is tasked with helping Illinois produce offensively after graduating its quarterback, top wide receiver and four offensive lineman. Plus, Illinois graduated tight end Tanner Arkin after the 2025 season, and saw tight end Cole Rusk transfer to Arizona. Justin Bowick, a wideout who tied for Illinois' most receiving touchdowns (5) in 2025 transferred to Oklahoma State. Naturally, Lunney will have to make some adjustments in 2026 as Illinois runs out a vastly different set of personnel on the offensive side of the ball. The offensive success in Champaign is likely to depend heavily on fifth-year senior quarterback Katin Houser, who transfers to Illinois from East Carolina. Illini ranked just outside preseason AP Top 25 "I think his command of the offense is excellent," Lunney said of Houser. "I think if you watched him practice, and listened to him practice, you would think this is a guy that's been in this system for a long time... Katin has really taken it upon himself to work hard, to master the offense, he's got an incredible mind and he's in total command of what we're doing... I think he has had a really good fall camp for us." The guys blocking for Houser, anchored by Wisconsin transfer center Jake Renfro and returning guard Brandon Henderson, are gelling together throughout fall camp. "I've been pleased with the way they have been working together," Lunney said of the Illini offensive line. "I think we're getting better there, and the coaches that are working with them have really done a nice job of developing chemistry, comradery and consistency. I do like the make up of that group, we've just got to continue to get better every day... I've been pleased with what I've seen, I thought the other day was our best day up front." At the wide receiver spot, Illinois' depth took a hit when it was determined that FIU transfer Alex Perry would need shoulder surgery and miss an extended period of time. "It's a next man up mentality," Lunney said. "It's opportunity for other people. That's why you have a bunch of guys, you have a bunch of depth and recruit a bunch of depth for moments like that across all positions. I think we got pieces of the puzzle there that we can function the way we envisioned functioning in our offense before that loss." Plus, Davin Stoffel and Christian Abney return for their second seasons in Champaign after both transferring in ahead of the 2025 season. That trio of experienced football players, plus some young guys in the room, present lots of potential in Lunney's eyes. "We feel good about where we're at with those three, they keep getting better," he said, also shouting out true freshman Will Vala as a young guy who can make an immediate impact.
