Based on how hard Dana White and the gang have been pushing Mackenzie Dern, you know they were hoping her UFC 330 fight against Gillian Robertson would be a star-making affair.

Alas, like most best laid plans in MMA, that didn’t quite come together. Instead, Dern struggled to submit her opponent despite ample time on the canvas, and a fight that started out as a fun brawl slowly ground down to a complete stall by round five.

Dern took the fight convincingly with 49–46, 49–46, and 48–47 scores, and Robertson never really had anything for the champion across five rounds. Mackenzie was faster with her striking, hit harder, kicked harder, and was definitely levels above Robertson when things hit the mat. She almost secured a rear naked choke in the dying seconds of the first round, but Robertson’s grit allowed her to hold on until the buzzer.

That was as exciting as the fight got. Dern hit several takedowns from there and was able to control Robertson on the ground, but she never threatened another finish. Round five saw her stuck on her back for multiple minutes. She won, and was never in danger of losing, But it just wasn’t the kind of bout that makes fans clamor to see more.

It certainly doesn’t erase the perception amongst more tuned-in fight fans that Dern is merely a placeholder champion until Weili Zhang returns to the division. Zhang relinquished the strawweight in October 2025 as part of a move to women’s flyweight, only to suffer a horribly one-sided loss to Valentina Shevchenko a month later.

It’s been nine months since then and we haven’t heard a fight-related peep from Zhang since. Will she even return, let alone back at strawweight? If she does, the general consensus is she’d whup Mackenzie Dern’s butt across the octagon with ease. Dern’s performance tonight against Robertson will only entrench that opinion further.

Tonight in Philadelphia, she had her chance to step out from the shadow of Weili Zhang with a powerful performance. What we saw didn’t qualify.
