Harry Maguire has reiterated his desire for Marcus Rashford to stay at Manchester United amid his uncertain situation.

The forward played his first minutes in a Red Devils shirt since December 2024 on Saturday when he was brought off the bench in United’s final pre-season friendly.

Michael Carrick’s side fell to a 4-2 defeat at the hands of a Ruben Amorim-managed AC Milan, which ended United’s summer preparations on a slightly sour note.

Rashford: The state of play

Yet, all attention has now been turned to the real business getting underway, with the Reds preparing to kick off their 2026/2027 campaign away to Hull City on Saturday in the 12.30pm kick-off.

As things stand, Rashford will be involved in some form by making the squad, though it remains to be seen if he will be granted a starting role from the off.

Even though he has been reintegrated into the setup, it’s thought INEOS would consider facilitating his departure if a suitable offer arrived.

Rashford’s complete record for United

They are keen to have the 28-year-old’s exorbitant £325,000-a-week wages removed from the books, but his salary is deterring suitors from making concrete proposals in the final weeks of the window.

What did Maguire have to say about Rashford?

Should he stay put for the entire season, Carrick will be hoping Rashford can maintain the prolific attacking form he showed with Barcelona, having returned 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions.

Maguire weighed in on the prospect of his fellow countryman sharing the pitch with him again, saying (via BBC Sport): “As players, we hope he stays because if he does, he is a big asset to have. He can improve us, for sure.

“You saw when he came on [against AC Milan], he threatened the backline really well. He could have scored. He’s a huge threat.

“I’ve played with Marcus for numerous years, and I know that playing against him and playing with him in training is going to help us.”
