Malik Nabers' rehab advancing as Giants prepare to ramp up his workload

New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh said on Wednesday that Malik Nabers remains on schedule in his recovery and could begin participating in group and team periods as soon as next week. “Yeah, he's kind of exactly where he's been. And we're looking towards soon ramping him up into some group periods and perhaps some team periods. Maybe next week, we'll see. He's doing great. He's working hard. Spirits are high. And yeah, we'll see where we're at next week,” Harbaugh told reporters. Nabers has been limited primarily to individual work and side drills throughout training camp while rehabbing a torn ACL and meniscus in his right knee, suffered in Week 4 of last season. He underwent reconstructive surgery on October 28 and required a second cleanup procedure in the spring to remove scar tissue that caused stiffness. The Giants kept him off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to open camp, allowing gradual integration into practices. Nabers has looked better than many expected, moving fluidly and showing sharp route-running in limited snaps. The team decreased his workload Wednesday as part of the planned progression. Monday’s practice, the first after the preseason opener, represents the earliest opportunity for Nabers to join 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 periods. The Giants are exercising understandable caution with their top offensive weapon. The goal remains for Nabers to be available for the Week 1 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on September 13.
