Malik Willis looked sharp in his Miami Dolphins debut

Malik Willis was on point in his Miami Dolphins debut.

Arguably the most intriguing quarterback signing of the offseason, Willis was nearly perfect in one series of work Friday night against the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium, leading Miami on a 16-play, 91-yard touchdown drive in his first outing as a Dolphin.

Willis completed 4-of-5 passes for 43 yards and ran twice for 9 yards. He should have been perfect on the night, too, delivering a pretty strike to Caleb Douglas for what should have been at least a 23-yard catch, but the rookie receiver accidentally stepped out of bounds before completing the grab.

No matter. A few plays later, Willis and Douglas – a third-round pick who has started to make some noise – hooked up on a pretty 28-yard completion.

Six plays later the Dolphins were in the end zone, and Willis’ night was done, giving way to Quinn Ewers, who finished last season as Miami’s starter.

It was a clean first outing for Willis. Dolphins fans only saw a sliver of what they’ll show this season, but Willis looked cool and in command in the new offense – a great look for first-year head coach Jeff Hafley and a brand-new operation, top to bottom.

Replacing Tua Tagovailoa won’t be easy, and Willis will enter Week 1 with only six regular-season starts to his name. Friday didn’t change much in the big picture, but it was an auspicious debut for a team hoping Willis can take advantage of his new opportunity.
