Manchester United have reportedly held direct talks with Newcastle United for Lewis Hall, who remains their primary target for the left-back role.

After reinforcing their midfield with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, INEOS shifted their focus to the full-back department.

While Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui will once again vie for a spot on the right side of the backline, Luke Shaw remains the only recognised left-back in the squad.

Man Utd held talks with Newcastle for Lewis Hall

After starting all 38 Premier League matches last season, Shaw consolidated his place as a pillar in Michael Carrick’s plans.

But with Man Utd playing twice per week this season, the 31-year-old certainly needs a teammate who he can share playing time with.

But since Patrick Dorgu is currently recognised as a left winger and Harry Amass has been placed on the market, a new arrival is required at Carrington.

Since the start of the summer, Lewis Hall has been identified as the ultimate target for the left-back role.

Thanks to his young age and important experience on the big stage, United view the 21-year-old as the ideal profile to support Shaw in the next few years before replacing him in the starting lineup.

However, Newcastle have recently made it clear that Hall isn’t going anywhere this summer, especially after cashing in on some of their other top players, namely Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes, collecting £260 million in the process.

But according to the Manchester United RoundTable, MUFC have held club-to-club talks with NUFC for the Slough native.

The source confirms that the Old Trafford outfit has yet to find a breakthrough on this front. And yet, the Man Utd officials are refusing to give up, as they’re still planning another onslaught.

Do Man Unitd stand a chance at signing Hall?

At the start of the summer, Man Utd were tipped to spend big on their midfield revamp, with some sources claiming the hierarchy had allocated a £200 million budget, similar to last year’s attacking overhaul.

While the club could still sign a third midfielder, their first two acquisitions only cost them £83 million.

Therefore, some reporters believe the club has reserved important funds for the final weeks of the transfer campaign, as Jason Wilcox and Co. remain vigilant in their search for late-market opportunities.

As for Hall, previous reports had estimated Newcastle’s asking price to be around £60 million. And while the Magpies would like to close the door on this chapter, the player’s will could loom large in this transfer saga, as is often the case nowadays.

The Chelsea youth product might be tempted to join Carrick’s ranks, but the question that begs itself is whether he’s willing to push his way out of St. James’ Park, or instead resign to his fate and remain at Matthias Jaissle’s disposal.
