The Seattle Mariners cannot afford to be giving away games as they try to rescue their 2026 campaign. They need to win on most nights to close the gap between them and the Houston Astros for the AL West lead, or to at least draw closer in the AL Wild Card race. Instead, the Mariners imploded completely on Tuesday, as nothing went right for them after suffering a 22-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.
If there’s a saving grace for the Mariners in 2026, it’s that they have quality pitching that at least keeps them in games despite their poor offense. But none of that was on display on Tuesday. Seattle’s pitchers allowed the Brewers to score 13 runs (12 earned) through the first seven innings, and in the interest of conserving the bullpen, they trotted out third baseman Leo Rivas on the mound to pitch the bottom of the eighth.
This ended up being an unmitigated disaster for Rivas and the Mariners, as they allowed the Brewers to score nine in the eighth to increase the deficit to an eye-popping 22 runs.

Seattle fell to 59-67 on the season following this defeat, and the silver lining is that a loss by 22 runs counts the same in the standings as a loss by one. But losing in this uncompetitive of a manner is causing the Mariners fanbase to panic as they fall further from the postseason picture.
“I sadly watched every pitch in this game. Probably the lowest point in the last 25 years of Mariners baseball, when you add up all the expectations for the season, what’s happened in the last month, and the result tonight,” X user @MrMaxPrice wrote.
“mariners baseball RIP 1977-2026,” @bmmohteraj added.
“Mariners fans can’t wait for this ball club to get back to Seattle for the next Jimothy fireworks hot dog from heaven night! And don’t forget about the salmon race! So many fun things to look forward to! Who needs a winner when you could just have fun!” @CLew2620 furthered.
