The Mariners followed up the worst game of the year with a commanding win that would have been a lot more inspiring if it had come two weeks ago. Alas, I’m a beggar being a chooser. A win is a win. A series win tomorrow won’t fix everything, but it could be an important step in the right direction. Or it could be another dose of false hope. The truth will be revealed one way or the other starting tomorrow evening at 4:20 pm on NBC and Peacock.

In Mariners news…

  • Matt Brash took a big step toward his eventual return yesterday.

Matt Brash threw his first off-the-mound bullpen session since hitting the IL two months ago here in Houston.

Next step will be another this week in Milwaukee, then potentially one more and/or a live BP after the team returns to Seattle next weekend.

— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) August 15, 2026
  • The Mariners claimed right-handed pitcher Troy Watson off waivers from the Tigers yesterday. Watson was placed on the 40-man roster and assigned to Tacoma.

Around the league…

  • Cardinals prospect Joshua Báez roared onto the professional stage by hitting a homerun in each of his first three at-bats of his MLB debut in Wrigley yesterday, the first player ever to do so.
  • Blue Jays All-Star Vlad Guerrero Jr. went on the concussion IL yesterday after he was involved in a collision with Yankees rookie George Lombard Jr. at third base on Friday night. Guerrero appears to have been struck in the side of the head by Lombard’s knee while attempting to go first-to-third on a ground ball.
  • The Pittsburgh Pirates are pushing back Paul Skenes’ next start to Wednesday. Skenes was originally scheduled to pitch today in the series finale against the Red Sox. It seems that the decision is not injury related, but could just be in the interest of giving him a little extra rest, and perhaps to avoid warming him up for a game that has the potential to be delayed by weather.
  • Mariners legend Marco Gonzales was DFA’d by the Rangers yesterday to make room on the roster for Jakob Junis returning from the IL.
  • Baek In-chun, legend of Korean baseball and the only man to hit .400 in a full season of KBO, passed away yesterday morning at the age of 83.

Nick’s pick…

  • The Seahawks lost their preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys 17-7 last night, but Bob Condotta is here to remind us all that preseason football isn’t about the final score.
