Mark Walter investigation, explained: Why suspicious timing of Lakers sale raised eyebrows around NBA originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. Mark Walter's decision to sell the Los Angeles Lakers — around one year after he officially bought the team from the Buss family — was viewed around the NBA as abrupt, to put it mildly. The billionaire took over controlling interest in the Lakers in 2025. In what seemed to be the dawn of a new era for the franchise, Walter was expected to help guide the Luka Doncic era with some of the deepest pockets of any ownership in North American professional sports. But in a deal that reportedly came together in the matter of days, Walter is now passing on his Lakers role to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner. Considering the timing, surprise and speed of his Lakers sale, another aspect of Walter's professional life has become of further interest across the NBA: a federal investigation he's been tied to. Here's what's known about Walter's connection to the federal investigation. MORE:What to know about new Lakers owners Josh Kushner and Bob Iger Why did Mark Walter sell the Lakers? For now, the most apparent reason for Walter's quick buy-and-sell of the Lakers — which does still need to be approved by the NBA's board of governors — appears simple: he was able to make billions in profit in the span of one year. When Walter bought the team in 2025, he took over controlling interest for a then-record franchise valuation of around $10 billion. But he was then able to pass the team ownership along for a valuation of $12.5 billion, per ESPN, setting another record for North American professional sports team sales and collecting a ton of profit in the process. Originally, Iger and Kushner were reportedly interested in financing the NBA's potential expansion team in Las Vegas, but they instead "pivoted to make an aggressive offer" to Walter to buy the Lakers.  Once those talks began, they reportedly came together quickly. "We were involved in pursuing the new franchise in Vegas. And while that happened, it was suggested to us that maybe Mark Walter would be interested in selling his stake in the Lakers. And we immediately decided that given the value of the franchise and the iconic nature of the team, that we would be really smart to pursue it. The deal came together in three days," Iger told the California Post. "It's that simple." Walter, who will continue owning other sports franchises, including MLB's Los Angeles Dodgers, did not provide reasoning for his sale in his public statement. "Owning the Los Angeles Lakers has been one of the great honors of my life -- an extraordinary investment, but what I will carry with me is the community, the fans, and a city that treats this team as family," Walter said in a statement, per ESPN. "I am grateful to Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff for welcoming me into this chapter. The Lakers belong to Los Angeles, and I have every confidence the best is still ahead." MORE: Where Lakers' $12.5 billion sale ranks among largest in U.S. sports history Mark Walter investigation Walter originally built his financial power through the insurance industry, and he has been under federal investigation for alleged tax fraud by companies tied to him. In July, Bloomberg reported that U.S. prosecutors in Manhattan have been looking into whether Delaware Life Insurance Co. and Clear Spring Life and Annuity Co., insurers that are controlled by Walter, failed to disclose that their private credit holdings backed other ventures that were controlled by Walter. "Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have been investigating potential financial improprieties at two of Walter’s insurance companies and at Guggenheim Partners, the financial firm Walter leads," Bloomberg reported in July. "The warrants formed part of an investigation scrutinizing Guggenheim’s $362 billion money management division and whether revenue information shared with outside parties was accurate, said the people with knowledge of the probe." Part of the federal investigation also included Walter having his mobile phone and computer seized by the FBI aboard a private plane at a Chicago airport where he was traveling last September, per Bloomberg. “Mark Walter and TWG have always acted in good faith, and those who have done business with Mark know him as honest and straightforward,” TWG Global, Walter’s holding company, said in a statement to Bloomberg. “We are cooperating with authorities, and we are confident these matters will be resolved favorably.” Guggenheim representatives did not respond to requests for comment. Additionally, Bloomberg reported that the Securities and Exchange Commission is running a parallel investigation. On Wednesday, the outlet reported that TWG Global is trying to raise money from investors to help pay down loans tied to its insurance businesses. To this point, with a federal investigation not being proof of any wrongdoing, there have also been no known arrests in the case. According to Yahoo Sports, Walter's case essentially is about "related party transactions," with Walter's companies allegedly doing deals together and not properly reporting their relationships. It remains unclear whether there are any connections between Walter's Lakers sale and the federal investigation, but his decision to cut ties with the NBA team was viewed as a surprise around the league. Front Office Sports reported that a source close to "dozens of sports team owners" called the Lakers sale "bizarre." “Why would you sell a team within a year, and especially without an auction?” a former NBA governor also told Front Office Sports. “Especially a premier asset like the Lakers.” When did Mark Walter investigation start? A full timeline of the investigation into Walter remains unclear, but it is known that an internal whistleblower complaint helped spark prosecutors' interest in the case, per the Wall Street Journal. By September 2025, the FBI seized Walter's phone and computer on a search warrant at a Chicago airport. It wasn't until July 2026 that Bloomberg and other outlets were able to report most of the known details about the case. What is Guggenheim Partners? Guggenheim Partners is a global investment and advisory financial services firm that was co-founded in 1999 by Walter, who serves as CEO. He folded his Chicago-based company, Liberty Hampshire, into the Guggenheim family office. It manages hundreds of billions in assets, providing asset management, investment banking and capital markets services. When did Mark Walter purchase the Lakers? Walter reached a reported agreement with the Buss family to purchase controlling interest in the Lakers on June 18, 2025. The sale was later approved on Oct. 30, 2025.  How much money did Mark Walter purchase the Lakers for? Walter first bought his controlling interest in the Lakers in 2025 for a reported team valuation worth around $10 billion. Now, he's selling the team for a reported valuation of $12.5 billion, profiting $2.5 billion in the span of around a year. MORE: What LeBron James has said about his NBA future Mark Walter net worth According to Forbes, Walter has an estimated net worth of $7.3 billion.  Walter also has controlling ownership interest of the MLB's Dodgers, the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks, TWG Motorsports and the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL).
