When you play for the Marshall Thundering Herd, honoring “The 75” becomes a part of your identity.

On Nov. 14, 1970, following a 17-14 road loss to East Carolina, 75 individuals — primarily Marshall football players, coaches, staff, and boosters — boarded Southern Airways Flight 932. The commercial aircraft crashed into a hill, and all 75 members on board tragically passed.

36 years after the crash, McG directed the film We Are Marshall, starring Matthew McConaughey and depicting the tragedy and aftermath of the Marshall football program.

To recognize the film’s 20th year release while honoring The 75, Marshall unveiled special alternate uniforms which will be worn at home against Appalachian State on Nov. 14 — exactly 56 years after the date of the tragedy.

20 years in the making.

This year, we celebrate both The 75 and 20 years since the release of We Are Marshall.

On November 14 we will wear a uniform honoring both.
A legacy we wear forward.

Marshall Football’s official Twitter account posted close-up details of the uniform, which features: a plain kelly green helmet with one white stripe and a commemorative sticker, a plain white jersey with kelly green numbers and trim, and white pants with one kelly green stripe on each side.

While these newly-unveiled alternates aren’t an exact replica of the 1970 uniforms or those depicted in the We Are Marshall film, there are elements which carry over, particularly the basic kelly green and white design and the block number font.

Marshall hosts the “Play For The 75” game on an annual basis, continuing to honor the lives lost to the plane crash, while also celebrating the triumphant rebirth of Marshall football following the tragedy.
