Max Eberl remaining hopeful Bayern Munich can sell trio of unwanted players

Earlier during Bayern Munich’s preseason preparation training camp in Tegernsee, board member for sport Max Eberl made it abundantly clear that there’s a trio of players the club is very much trying to offload before the summer transfer window ends. All of João Palhinha, Sacha Boey and Bryan Zaragoza are considered to be out-of-favor players that the club has made clear they are trying to sell. All three had loan spells away from Bayern but Vincent Kompany is not currently planning with any of them in the coming season, though Palhinha had previously said he would be willing to stay and fight for his place in the team.

With the club having already brought in Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt and Ismael Saibari from PSV Eindhoven and the lucrative contract extension offers for both Harry Kane and Michael Olise on the horizon, Bayern’s front office has been tasked with trying to reduce the club’s overall wage bill. Offloading the trio of Palhinha, Boey and Zaragoza is a massive step towards those efforts, which is why the club is preferring permanent sales for all of the players as opposed to loans.

During the press conference where Saibari was officially presented as a Bayern player, Eberl was asked about the matter once again, and he is remaining confident Bayern will be able to sell the trio of unwanted players before the transfer window closes, even though the clock is ticking.

“The deadline is September 1st at 8PM. The transfer market is different after a World Cup. We still have two and a half weeks. We communicated our plan clearly from the beginning internally and externally. There’s some movement. Aston Villa contacted us about João Palhinha, but we haven’t found an agreement,” Eberl explained (via @iMiaSanMia).

As Eberl alluded to, there is some time left in the transfer window, but Bayern still has their work cut out for them — Eberl and Christoph Freund in particular. It’s the stage of the transfer window where a lot of clubs bluff, call other club’s bluffs, and hold out on deals to try to negotiate fees down until the dying minutes of the transfer window, but the goal is for Bayern to offload the trio of players in a manner that pleases all parties. The sooner that happens, though, the less of a potential distraction it will be as Bayern’s competitive schedule kicks off on the 22nd of this month by virtue of the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup vs. Borussia Dortmund.
