The Detroit Tigers needed a reset after being swept at home by the Chicago White Sox. They found one Monday night in Pittsburgh, although the path to the finish line became far more stressful than expected.
Kevin McGonigle launched his 13th home run of the season, Hao-Yu Lee reached base five times and Brett Callahan delivered a two-run single as the Tigers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-5, at PNC Park.
The victory improved Detroit to 61-64 and created a three-way tie with Baltimore and Texas for the final American League wild-card position. The standings show just how crowded the race remains, with Toronto, Minnesota, and Cleveland all within a game of the Tigers.
Detroit wasted little time getting its offense moving against Pirates starter Carmen Mlodzinski. Gleyber Torres opened the game with a walk before Colt Keith extended the inning with a two-out single. Zach McKinstry followed with an RBI single to center, and Lee brought home Keith with another single to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
The Tigers added two more with two outs in the second. Torres singled and McGonigle turned on a 92.5 mph cutter, sending it 405 feet to right-center field. The ball left his bat at 104.6 mph and extended Detroit’s lead to 4-0. It was McGonigle’s 13th home run and gave him 50 RBIs on the season.

Framber Valdez took advantage of the early support. He retired the Pirates in order in the first and worked around two runners in the second, helped by a strong running catch from Max Clark in center field. Valdez allowed only two hits through the first four innings as the Tigers controlled the game.
Clark added to the lead in the fifth. Lee walked and advanced to third when Callahan reached on an error. Clark then lined a single into left field to score Lee and make it 5-0.
Pittsburgh scored its first run in the bottom half following a throwing error by Lee, but Detroit immediately answered with a three-run sixth inning.
McGonigle opened the inning with a single and advanced on a wild pitch. The Pirates then issued three walks, including a bases-loaded free pass to Lee that forced home McGonigle. Callahan followed with a two-run single to center, scoring Keith and McKinstry to give Detroit what appeared to be a comfortable 8-1 advantage.
Callahan’s hit was particularly important after his memorable major-league debut Sunday. The rookie continues to give the Tigers quality at-bats and needed production from the bottom third of the lineup.
The game changed quickly in the bottom of the sixth. Nick Gonzales doubled, and Valdez issued consecutive two-out walks to Rafael Flores Jr. and Jake Mangum. Nick Yorke cleared the bases with a double into left field, cutting Detroit’s lead to 8-4.
Kyle Finnegan replaced Valdez, but Henry Davis greeted him with an RBI single that made it 8-5 before Finnegan finally ended the inning.
Valdez earned the victory, improving to 8-8, but his final line did not reflect how well he pitched early. He allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits and four walks over 5⅔ innings. He struck out five and threw 91 pitches.
With the momentum suddenly belonging to Pittsburgh, Drew Sommers provided the most important work of the night. Sommers entered in the seventh with two runners aboard and one out. He retired Brandon Lowe on a groundout and struck out Flores to preserve the three-run lead.
Sommers then worked a clean eighth, striking out Yorke and Davis. He completed 1⅔ scoreless innings without allowing a hit and struck out three, stranding both runners he inherited.
Kenley Jansen handled the ninth without drama. He retired the side on eight pitches, recording two strikeouts and earning his 16th save.
The Tigers finished with 14 hits and received production from nearly every part of the lineup. Lee went 3-for-3 with two walks and two RBIs, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances. McKinstry went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and an RBI, while McGonigle and Clark collected two hits apiece.
It was not the cleanest victory, especially after an 8-1 lead became an 8-5 game in the span of four batters. But after a difficult weekend against Chicago, the Tigers needed a win more than they needed style points.
They got it, and they are once again sitting directly in the middle of the American League wild-card race.
