Mercedes technical director James Allison has offered a "churlish" assessment of the Silver Arrows' 2026 season so far, admitting to a "degree of frustration" over the team's recent reliability concerns. Nevertheless, Mercedes enter the second half of the season with a healthy lead in the Driver and Constructors' standings. 50 points separate championship leader Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, with Mercedes' George Russell nine points further behind in P3. Meanwhile the Brackley-based team lead the Scuderia by 72 points in the Constructors'. If it was not for reliability issues, those gaps may have easily been larger heading into the summer break, however. After a ruthless five-race winning streak for Antonelli, power unit and mechanical failures have opened the door for the likes of Ferrari and McLaren, with Antonelli suffering a power-unit related DNF on the day Hamilton secured his maiden Ferrari win at Barcelona. Following a wheel shield issue for Antonelli at Silverstone, which ultimately resulted in a P16 finish, his teammate Russell encountered energy deployment problems before his Lap 1 DNF crash with Hamilton at Spa. A water leak in Hungarian GP Qualifying, and then a technical issue at the race start followed for the Briton, meaning Mercedes can ill afford further engine related issues with the risk of grid penalties. 'There's a degree of frustration,' says Mercedes' Allison Photo: Race Pictures Photo: Race Pictures Reflecting on the season so far, Allison could not hide his concerns over reliability despite the strong start to the campaign overall. Speaking on the Nu Silver Arrows podcast, he said: “It may sound a little churlish, but probably not as satisfied as I would like to be. "If somebody had offered us that position before the season started, I'd have taken it immediately. But given the competitiveness of the car we've had this year, I think we should have scored more points than we have. "There's a degree of frustration about that across the team. At the same time, it means we're looking forward to the second half of the season and the opportunity to put some of those missed opportunities right." Hywel Thomas, Managing Director of Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP), also added: "In terms of the point situation, then, yeah, very similar to what James has just described. "We know that there are some points left on the table. We know some of that's because of our reliability. And we know we need to put that right if we want to continue to win races and continue to stay at the top of the tables.” Mercedes hoping to 'clean up our act' Photo: Race Pictures Photo: Race Pictures While confident the Silver Arrows will be able to maintain their lead at the top of the 2026 standings - thanks to upgrades yet to come - Allison nonetheless echoed team principal Toto Wolff’s ‘self-inflicted’ comments pre-Hungary with regard to snuffing out the reliability issues suffered so far. “We collectively want, make sure that we deliver all of those upgrade opportunities smoothly, cleanly, effectively to the track," Allison added. "Just as importantly, and in fact arguably more so, that we make sure that the second half of the season is untroubled by reliability errors and sort of self-inflicted wounds that have been too prevalent in the first half of the year. “Because actually, that is going to be far more of a factor. If you have a really good upgrade season, it will swing the points one way or another by 10, 15 points, 20 maybe, depending on your assumption. But one DNF is that in one go. So I think our focus will be trying to make sure that we really clean our act up in the second half of the year.”
