Mikel Merino has hailed Bruno Guimaraes as an “amazing signing” and believes Arsenal now possess “probably the best midfield in football” following the Brazilian’s arrival from Newcastle United.

Merino helped Arsenal secure the Premier League title last season before playing a key role in Spain’s World Cup triumph, completing a remarkable double of two of the biggest trophies in football.

However, the 30-year-old is determined not to rest on those achievements as Arsenal prepare for another season.

“It’s not easy, I can tell you that,” Merino said.

“But it sounds amazing, I’m very, very happy.

“Probably the two hardest trophies to win in football. Proud to have achieved that, but obviously this doesn’t stop and football carries on, so we need to keep going.”

Merino also praised new Arsenal signing Bruno Guimaraes after the midfielder made his first appearance for the club in their pre-season draw with Como.

“Yeah, an amazing signing,” Merino said.

“He has proved throughout these years how good he is at Newcastle. And he showed it today again.

“A lot of composure, technical ability, a lot of defensive effort as well.

“So it’s a very good signing. A top player, but we have many of those in this team. So everyone that comes to help the team is welcome.”

Merino believes Arsenal now boast one of the strongest midfield groups in world football following the signing of Guimaraes.

“Honestly, it’s unreal. Probably the best midfield in football,” he said.

“The amount of quality that we have there, with every player that can come on the pitch and make a good shift. It’s great.

“That’s good for the team. That’s good for the squad. It raises everyone’s level because if you have a bad day, the one that is close to you is going to do a great job.”

Merino also believes Arsenal’s hunger for success remains as strong as ever despite winning the Premier League last season.

“I think we have an amazing squad,” he continued.

“The hunger is still there. Not because we won it last season, we’re going to be happy with it.

“We want more and more and more and we want every trophy possible.

“That’s the best quality of this team. Not only the amount of depth that we have, the quality that we have in every position, but that hunger.”
