Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here. On Tuesday night, former MLB shortstop Jose Iglesias was in attendance at Citi Field to watch two of his former teams in the New York Mets and San Diego Padres face off. Iglesias was part of the Mets roster that made it to the NLCS in 2024, and he was a bench piece for the Padres last year. The 36-year-old played for eight teams during his 15-year MLB career, but at the end of the day, Citi Field is what he considers his “home” in the big leagues. Iglesias then gave out his reasoning for why he considers the Mets’ home as his as well even though he only spent one season with the franchise. “You can see it. You can feel it. Everything we went through as a team, as an organization together, how we build the chemistry together, how we became a family. Way beyond that, two years later, here I am in Citi Field and it feels just like 2024, if not better. Just walking around the stadium, the kids laughing and hugging, that’s special,” Iglesias told Steve Gelbs of SNY. Watch sports LIVE with fuboTV (free trial)

Jose Iglesias is on the short list of my favorite players I’ve ever covered. It was so great to see him back at Citi Field tonight, a place he referred to more than once as “home.” His time with the Mets may have been short, but the impact was immense. What a great conversation… — Steve Gelbs (@SteveGelbs) August 19, 2026

Iglesias became a fan favorite among Mets fans in the lone season he spent with the team, and for good reason. According to Fangraphs’ WAR stat, he put up the best season of his career during his time in New York. In just 85 games for the team, Iglesias tallied 2.5 fWAR, thanks to the incredible .829 OPS he had to go along with his customary strong defense in the infield. The Mets, however, decided not to bring Iglesias back, which wasn’t an entirely poor decision considering that he crashed down to being a negative fWAR player in 2025 for the Padres. But they will at least always have the 2024 season to cherish in their hearts, creating a home for it in their memory palace. Iglesias, of course, is now pursuing a career in the performing arts, and he’s set to make his Broadway debut on the 27th of August.
