Michael Penix Jr. Is a Boom-or-Bust Superflex Dart With a Lot to Prove

Michael Penix Jr. was supposed to be the future in Atlanta, and he may still be. A torn ACL and a crowded quarterback room have complicated that picture considerably heading into 2026. He now finds himself fighting to reclaim a job that was recently his without question. Should fantasy football managers bother with Penix this season?

Should You Draft Michael Penix Jr. in Fantasy Football?

Penix is entering his third NFL season, and the counting stats tell a frustrating story. In theory, a player at this stage could have close to 34 starts under his belt by now. Penix has made just 11. Part of that gap is circumstantial, as he spent most of his rookie year sitting behind Kirk Cousins and was limited to five appearances and three starts. The far more concerning explanation is the injuries.

That injury history is genuinely alarming for a player this early in his career. Penix tore the ACL in his left knee last season, and he had already torn the ACL in his right knee twice during college. His college days also featured a broken right collarbone and a separated left shoulder. This is a lengthy and varied medical file, touching both the upper and lower body, which is exactly the kind of profile that makes a team nervous about long-term durability.

None of that means Penix has failed to show the Falcons something worth believing in. He simply has not been able to stay on the field long enough to prove he is the answer. Given the combination of the injuries and the thin body of work, it makes complete sense that Atlanta brought in a veteran like Tua Tagovailoa to push him. That is not a vote of no confidence so much as a prudent hedge on an unproven, oft-injured commodity.

The production does contain flashes of a real ceiling. Penix posted three games of 19 or more fantasy points last season, the kind of outings that hint at legitimate upside. The problem was everything in between. He averaged only 13.7 fantasy points per game because his floor was alarmingly low, including three separate games under 8.0 points. That volatility is the defining trait of his fantasy profile right now.

Penix’s Redraft Fantasy Football Value

The starting situation is the crux of everything, and it does not break in Penix’s favor to open the year. He is not going to start Week 1, largely because his recovery from the ACL tear has kept him from taking on a full workload while Tagovailoa banks first-team reps. That reality alone removes him from consideration.

In 1QB leagues, there is no reason to give Penix a second look. Fantasy managers do not draft NFL backup quarterbacks. Even if and when Penix works his way back into the starting lineup and supplants Tagovailoa, he will not be worth an immediate waiver-wire add. The best-case outcome in that setting is that he becomes a name to monitor and an occasional matchup-based streamer, which is not something you spend a draft pick to secure.

Superflex changes the math, as it always does at the quarterback position. Penix is still worth drafting there, if only because he is very likely to make starts at some point this season, and QBs are currency in Superflex. The key is calibrating the expectation properly. He should be more of a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency selection than any kind of priority.

Putting it together, my rank sits at QB30, a few spots ahead of his QB33 ADP. That slight edge acknowledges the probability of starts and the flashes of upside without ignoring the shaky hold on the job.

Penix is a late-round Superflex dart with real week-winning ability on his best days, paired with a floor that can sink a lineup. Draft him as depth with a lottery ticket attached, not as a quarterback you are counting on.

Penix’s Dynasty Fantasy Football Value

Dynasty is where Penix gets genuinely interesting, because 2026 is a true inflection point for his entire career. The path in front of him has two distinct hurdles. First, he needs to prove he can actually stay healthy, which is no small ask given his history. Then he has to demonstrate that he deserves to be a starting quarterback in this league at all.

Given the limited sample and the poor coaching staff he played under previously, it would be unfair to slam the door on Penix as a viable NFL starter just yet. There is a real player in there when healthy. The wrinkle is his age relative to his experience. Penix was an older prospect because those injuries prolonged his college career. So, at 26, he is nearing the point where a franchise has to decide whether he is worth a long-term commitment.

TRADE NOW:PFN’s Dynasty Trade Calculator

We have Penix at QB30 in our consensus dynasty rankings, which strikes me as a fair reflection of both the upside and the risk. He is nowhere near the end of the road at 26, but the runway to prove himself is shorter than his youth might suggest. If he cannot convince the Falcons this season, he will very likely be wearing another uniform as a backup in 2027. This year determines which version of that future arrives.
