For Michael Petersen, the 2026 season has offered something he has been chasing for years: an opportunity to establish himself as a dependable major league reliever. The 32-year-old right-hander has embraced his role with the Miami Marlins, turning a winding professional journey into a productive first full season with the club. It is also a return of sorts, as Petersen spent time with the club in 2024 and 2025. Petersen talked with independent journalist Tyler Boronski, on behalf of Marlins Roundtable, Monday at Citizens Bank Park before the series opener between the Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies, a crucial one for both teams. The two discussed Petersen’s adjustment to Miami, the experience of pitching in important games and how comfortable he has become in the Marlins’ bullpen. For Petersen, that comfort has been earned through years of perseverance. He has taken a less traditional route to establishing himself in the majors, making each opportunity feel significant. Now, with the Marlins, Petersen has found a place where he can focus on the job in front of him rather than wondering when his next chance will come. “I think there are a lot of people in that situation where you have it, you know you can do it. It’s just getting the chances and letting you get the opportunity to do it,” Petersen said. Petersen’s latest outing wasn’t his best, as he allowed four runs during the Marlins’ 6-4 loss Tuesday. Miami led 3-1 in the sixth inning before dropping the game, falling to 64-63 and four games behind the final National League Wild Card spot. Building trust with Petersen, nonetheless, has helped him settle into a role that can change from night to night. Sometimes he enters with the Marlins protecting a lead. Other times, he is asked to keep a game within reach or navigate a difficult part of an opposing lineup. "You get used to it," Petersen admitted. "It's one of those things where you can kind of feel the tide of the game." Petersen also has appreciated the atmosphere surrounding the Marlins as the season moves into its most important stretch. Games against divisional opponents such as Philadelphia carry added weight, but Petersen said he tries to approach them with the same mentality he brings to every appearance. The Marlins will hope their ace, Sandy Alcantara, can flip the script Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. ET and go deep into the game to give Petersen some much-needed rest as the club looks to finish the road trip on a positive note.
