A new era of Michigan football begins this fall, and the Wolverines aren’t exactly getting an easy path to start it.

Kyle Whittingham’s first season in Ann Arbor features a 12-game schedule loaded with major Big Ten matchups, rivalry games and a huge non-conference battle against Oklahoma. Michigan does get one major advantage: eight of its 12 games will be played inside Michigan Stadium.

With Bryce Underwood entering his second season and several young players expected to take bigger roles, Michigan’s schedule gives the Wolverines opportunities to make a statement — but there aren’t many weeks they can afford to overlook.

September Gives Michigan a Huge Home-Field Advantage

Michigan won’t leave Ann Arbor for the entire month of September.

The season begins Sept. 5 against Western Michigan under the lights at 7:30 p.m. on NBC. It’s a matchup Michigan should be expected to control, but it also gives Whittingham his first real opportunity to show what his version of Michigan football will look like.

Things get much more interesting one week later.

Oklahoma comes to the Big House on Sept. 12 for a noon kickoff on FOX. Michigan traveled to Norman last season, and now the Sooners make the return trip to Ann Arbor. Michigan has designated the game as a Maize Out, adding even more attention to what should be one of the biggest non-conference games of the season.

Michigan then hosts UTEP on Sept. 19 before opening Big Ten play against Iowa on Sept. 26.

Four straight home games give Michigan an opportunity to settle into its new system before the schedule becomes much more difficult.

Big Ten Play Starts to Heat Up

Michigan’s first road trip doesn’t come until Oct. 3 at Minnesota, where the Wolverines will battle for the Little Brown Jug.

After that, Michigan gets an early bye week on Oct. 10.

The timing could be extremely valuable because what follows might be one of the most important two-game stretches of Michigan’s season.

Penn State visits Ann Arbor on Oct. 17 for Homecoming, followed by Indiana on Oct. 24. Both opponents entered the preseason ranked in the AP Top 10, with Indiana coming off a national championship season.

If Michigan wants to put itself in position to compete for a Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff spot, those are the types of games it will need to win.

The Wolverines close October with their second road game of the season, traveling to Rutgers on Oct. 31.

Michigan State Comes to the Big House

There is never much explanation needed when Michigan and Michigan State meet.

The Spartans travel to Ann Arbor on Nov. 7, giving Michigan another rivalry game at home.

Regardless of where either program sits entering November, this is always one of the games circled on the schedule.

For Michigan, it’ll also begin a difficult final month where three of its last four games could have major postseason implications.

The Trip to Oregon Could Change Everything

Michigan’s toughest road test may come Nov. 14 at Oregon.

Going into Autzen Stadium in November will be one of the biggest challenges on Michigan’s entire schedule. It’s also Michigan’s only trip outside the Eastern or Central time zones during the regular season.

This could easily become one of those games that has Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff implications for both programs.

Michigan then returns home to face UCLA on Nov. 21 for Senior Day.

And then comes the game everyone will be waiting for.

Everything Leads Back to Ohio State

Michigan travels to Columbus on Nov. 28 for another edition of The Game.

Kickoff is already scheduled for noon on FOX.

Michigan and Ohio State rarely need anything extra to make their rivalry important, but the 2026 matchup could once again have massive Big Ten and playoff implications.

It will also be Whittingham’s first experience coaching in The Game.

No matter what happens during the first 11 games, Michigan’s season will ultimately be judged in large part by what happens in Columbus.

Michigan’s Full 2026 Schedule

  • Sept. 5: vs. Western Michigan — 7:30 p.m.
  • Sept. 12: vs. Oklahoma — Noon
  • Sept. 19: vs. UTEP — 3:30 p.m.
  • Sept. 26: vs. Iowa — TBD
  • Oct. 3: at Minnesota — TBD
  • Oct. 10: BYE
  • Oct. 17: vs. Penn State — TBD
  • Oct. 24: vs. Indiana — TBD
  • Oct. 31: at Rutgers — TBD
  • Nov. 7: vs. Michigan State — TBD
  • Nov. 14: at Oregon — TBD
  • Nov. 21: vs. UCLA — TBD
  • Nov. 28: at Ohio State — Noon

A Schedule Built for a Playoff Run — If Michigan Is Ready

Michigan’s 2026 schedule is difficult, but it’s also set up nicely for a team with playoff expectations.

Eight home games are a massive advantage. Michigan doesn’t have to leave Ann Arbor until October, gets Penn State, Indiana and Michigan State at home and has a bye week before the toughest part of its October schedule.

The biggest questions will come away from home.

Trips to Oregon and Ohio State late in the season could determine just how far this Michigan team can go.

The talent is there. Bryce Underwood has another year of experience, Andrew Marsh looks ready for a bigger role and Whittingham brings a proven track record to Ann Arbor.

Now Michigan has to navigate a schedule that will give it plenty of chances to prove it belongs among the best teams in college football.
