Mike Rupp believes the Detroit Red Wings should remove Dylan Larkin as captain before training camp begins. Larkin requested a trade after another NHL season without playoffs. This has created an uncertain situation around Detroit’s leadership. The Red Wings still have not found a suitable trade resolution. Speaking on the Tri-State Hockey Podcast, Rupp said Detroit must establish a clear direction under its new regime. “You cannot, for a franchise that has been struggling like they have to make the playoffs,” Rupp said. “You’ve got to draw your line in the sand.” MORE: Dylan Larkin won’t stay without one major change, says Red Wings analyst Rupp stressed that his criticism was not aimed at Larkin’s character. Instead, he believes Detroit needs to separate its captaincy from the current trade situation. “Not with Dylan Larkin, with the team about what we’re doing moving forward culture-wise,” Rupp said. “What it’s going to be about getting over the hump.” Larkin remains one of Detroit’s most productive players. He recorded 34 goals and 67 points across 74 games last season despite the team’s continued postseason struggles. However, his trade request has changed the context around his leadership role. Detroit now faces the possibility of entering camp with its captain wanting a different destination. “You have to shed that to your language, Johnny, the stink, around the franchise,” Rupp said. “Right now there’s a lot of stink and it’s around your captain.” Rupp’s point is about setting expectations rather than punishing Larkin for requesting a trade. Steve Yzerman moved into an advisory role, leaving the franchise searching for a new hockey operations leader. The Red Wings also extended their playoff drought to 10 seasons after another late-season collapse. Their 41-31-10 record produced 92 points, but again fell short of the postseason. So, removing Larkin’s captaincy would send a clear message. It would also allow Detroit to establish new leadership if the trade request remains unresolved. MORE: Auston Matthews’ chiropractor says Maple Leafs star is ‘ready to go’ after knee injury The decision carries risks, though. Larkin remains a major offensive contributor and has strong standing inside the locker room. Still, Rupp believes Detroit must prioritize its future direction. He said, “This is going to get smoked out here pretty soon.” If Larkin remains on the roster when camp opens, Detroit will have to decide whether production or leadership continuity matters more. — Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter —
