Head coach Mike Vrabel attempted to separate the cornerback’s physical status from his contract situation during his Saturday press conference.
Gonzalez will not return to practice immediately, according to Vrabel. The two-time Pro Bowl selection continues to condition and receive treatment, but the Patriots do not consider him ready for football activities.
“I don’t think I would expect Christian, or should you expect Christian,” Vrabel said. “Working hard, conditioning, but won’t be practicing. He’s not ready to get back out there and practice yet.”
Contract Talks Continue
The update comes as Gonzalez and the Patriots reportedly work through contract negotiations. That timing has generated outside speculation about whether his absence is strictly physical. Vrabel pushed back against the idea that Gonzalez’s contract situation is affecting his participation.

“Absolutely,” Vrabel said when asked whether the Patriots remain on the same page with Gonzalez. “We’ve talked about his professionalism. … This isn’t anything that, it was something that happened in practice.”
Vrabel added that Gonzalez has been where the team expects him to be, including in treatment and meetings.

More To Come
The Patriots still have reason to monitor the situation closely. Gonzalez is the foundation of their secondary and one of the NFL’s best young cornerbacks. His ability to shadow top receivers allows New England to be more aggressive with its coverage and pressure packages. In his absence, the Patriots have given additional opportunities to Kindle Vildor and other cornerbacks. Vrabel praised Vildor’s physicality while noting his efforts to become a more versatile coverage player.
“He wants to play physical,” Vrabel said. “Not just playing man coverage, not just pressing, not just trying to jam them and be physical at the line of scrimmage, but use some of the other tools that we have.”
Carlton Davis and Charles Woods were expected to move closer to returning Saturday, which could stabilize the position temporarily. Still, the Patriots’ best version of the secondary includes Gonzalez. The uncertainty is not over, but Vrabel’s message was direct: Gonzalez is injured, engaged with the team and following a recovery plan.
For now, New England is treating his contract talks and his absence as two separate matters.
