Mitchell Starc claimed the record for the most Test wickets by a left-arm bowler on August 13, 2026, when he dismissed Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam during the first Test at Darwin. Islam was caught by Nathan Lyon, giving Starc his 434th Test scalp and moving him past Sri Lanka's Rangana Herath, who had held the mark at 433 wickets.

Starc, 36, reached the milestone in his 106th Test match. The record-breaking delivery arrived early in Bangladesh's first innings, underlining the Australian pacer's continued threat at the top of the order even deep into his international career.

The list spans two distinct disciplines. Herath and Vettori built their tallies through spin, while Starc, Akram and Vaas relied on pace. Starc's average of 26.50 sits between Akram's outstanding 23.62 and Herath's 28.07, placing him among the most effective wicket-takers in the group regardless of style.

Where does Starc now stand in the all-time Test wicket-takers list?

Starc's 434 wickets place him joint 11th on the all-time Test wicket-takers list alongside India's Kapil Dev. Kapil Dev accumulated the same tally across 131 matches between 1978 and 1994, making the comparison in terms of matches played a notable one: Starc has reached the same landmark in 25 fewer Tests.

Six more wickets would take Starc into the top 10 of all-time Test wicket-takers. South Africa's Dale Steyn currently holds 10th place with 439 wickets from 93 Tests. Should Starc pass that mark, he would become only the 10th bowler in history to take 440 or more Test wickets, a further measure of how rare sustained success at this level remains.

How does Starc's record compare with Herath's left-arm legacy?

Herath finished his Test career with 433 wickets from 93 Tests at an average of 28.07. As a left-arm spinner, he built that record through turn, flight and relentless accuracy across more than a decade of service for Sri Lanka. Starc has taken a different route to the top of the same list, generating his wickets through pace and swing rather than spin.

The gap between Starc and the third name on the left-arm list is substantial. Pakistan's Wasim Akram retired with 414 wickets from 104 Tests at an average of 23.62, leaving a 20-wicket margin between Akram and the new record holder. That gap underlines how long Herath's record stood and how significant Starc's achievement is in the broader history of left-arm bowling in Test cricket.
