MM 8.18: Maryland football adds veteran CB Jordan Scruggs

When it was confirmed Dontay Joyner would not return for Maryland football’s 2026 season, the secondary lost a key piece, leaving its depth to be tested. The Terps addressed that secondary depth Monday with the transfer portal addition of cornerback Jordan Scruggs.

Maryland will be Scruggs’ sixth stop in six years playing college football. He began his career redshirting at Division II Washburn University, with a season at Division II Central Missouri followed by a season at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas.

From there, he made the jump to Division I, establishing himself at South Alabama by recording 69 tackles, two pass breakups and an interception. That led to interest from West Virginia, where Scruggs spent the 2025 season. While there, he recorded 32 tackles, two pass breakups and an interception while playing in every game.

After filing for an extra year of eligibility on August 1, Scruggs had an injunction granted Monday that allowed him to join Maryland. With less than three weeks remaining until the Terps’ season-opener, it remains to be determined what role he will play in the defense.
