Super Bowl LXI is set to take place on Valentine’s Day for the first time in Super Bowl history, and NFL fans already have plenty to say about the clash between football and romance.
The championship game will be played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on February 14, 2027, creating an unusual challenge for couples across the US.
For many fans, the biggest question is simple: football or date night?

NFL fans joke about Super Bowl LXI ruining Valentine’s Day plans
The reaction online has been filled with jokes about relationships being tested when the Super Bowl arrives.
One fan wrote: ‘Super Bowl on Valentine’s just means more dudes ditching dates for the TV, like always. Basic AF.’
Another added: ‘Alotttttt of relationships will be deleted because of this lol’.
There were also plenty of predictions about what could happen nine months later.
‘I’m predicting lots of Super Bowl babies by next year 😂👏🏼,’ one fan joked.
Another took the same idea further, writing: ‘Whatever city wins it, there will be a influx in the population in about a year lol’.
One particularly elaborate reaction imagined a future news story blaming the Super Bowl for falling birth rates: ‘In other news today December 2027 has seen the sharpest drop in birth rates in decades. Theories suggest it may be related to the Super Bowl being hosted on Valentine’s Day earlier this year.’
Not everyone saw the funny side.
‘A lot of guys gonna have to make a tough choice,’ one supporter wrote, while another simply called it ‘So unromantic of the NFL.’
Another fan summed up the problem by saying: ‘The NFL really looked at Valentine’s Day and said: make your significant other compete for attention.’
One supporter also argued that the date could hurt both the Super Bowl and businesses relying on Valentine’s Day.
‘I still think it’s a mistake to put it on Valentine’s Day,’ they wrote, suggesting the NFL should have moved the season earlier or later.
The timing certainly creates a unique problem. Dinner reservations could clash with pre-game coverage, while couples planning a romantic evening may have to work around one of the biggest events in American sport.
There is at least one solution. With the game falling on Presidents’ Day weekend, couples could celebrate Valentine’s Day on Saturday before settling in for Super Bowl Sunday.
For now, fans have plenty of time to decide whether February 14, 2027 will become a relationship headache or simply another excuse to watch football together.
