India's bowling coach Morne Morkel has outlined the selection challenge facing captain Shubman Gill as the team prepares for the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle on August 15, 2026. The match is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle and comes after significant changes to India's bowling unit.

Morkel addressed the complexity of managing India's left-arm spinner options during the pre-series press conference. The squad includes Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and a third left-arm spinner, each bringing distinct qualities to the team's attack.

"Kuldeep is an attacking spinner, Jadeja has class and experience. Our three left-arm spinners are different. They have the skill. Depends on how Shubman uses them," Morkel said in the pre-match press conference.

Galle pitch conditions and India's bowling approach

India's bowling plans have been disrupted by injury. Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out on August 3 due to a knee injury and replaced by Auqib Nabi, while Washington Sundar remains unavailable for the first Test. Jadeja's return to the Test squad after sitting out the Afghanistan series in June adds another dimension to the selection puzzle.

Morkel assessed the Galle pitch and its implications for India's bowling strategy. He noted that the surface would present opportunities for spin bowling alongside pace options, though conditions would evolve as the match progressed.

"Looks a good surface, can use spin as an attacking option with pace from the other end. It’s all about mindset and as the match will go on, there will be up and down; uneven bounce," Morkel said.

The bowling coach provided specific guidance on how India's pace bowlers should adapt to the pitch conditions as the match develops. He highlighted the importance of tactical execution and awareness of how the surface would change over time.

"The ball will go soft after 20-25 overs. Need to be smart - use the crease, short ball and execute the plans. Surface looks good to the eye and first innings could belong to the batters. Bat big," Morkel said.
