India's first Test against Sri Lanka begins on August 15 at Galle International Cricket Stadium in a two-match series led by Shubman Gill. The squad selection has sparked debate over the middle-order batting position, particularly at No. 6, where two contenders are in focus. Sarfaraz Khan returned to the Test squad as a replacement after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out with injury, creating fresh competition for a spot in the playing XI.

Former India cricketer Murali Kartik has weighed in on the selection discussion, offering a clear perspective on who should start in the first Test. Kartik acknowledged Sarfaraz's credentials but expressed a preference for Dhruv Jurel, the Rajasthan Royals wicketkeeper, to occupy the No. 6 position.

Why Kartik backs Jurel over Sarfaraz for the opening Test

Kartik's reasoning centres on team balance and the value Jurel brings beyond batting alone. The wicketkeeper can contribute with the bat and also provides India with an additional wicketkeeping option, offering flexibility in the squad structure. Kartik feels this dual utility makes Jurel the better choice for the opening Test on the turning pitches expected at Galle.

"Sarfaraz has done nothing wrong. He is coming into the team as a replacement player. The messaging is important, the players should feel secure about their places. Dhruv Jurel is also an important wicket-keeper. For me he should be in the playing XI over Sarfaraz Khan," Kartik said in a roundtable with journalists, as an expert for the Sony Sports Network.

Sarfaraz Khan has established himself as a strong performer in red-ball cricket and brings particular strengths against spin bowling. His footwork and sweep shots are especially useful on turning pitches like those anticipated in Sri Lanka, where the conditions typically favour spinners. However, Kartik's view suggests that Jurel's overall contribution to the team's balance outweighs Sarfaraz's specific skill set for this particular series.

The selection decision carries broader implications for squad stability and player confidence. Sarfaraz's arrival as cover for an injured teammate does not mean automatic inclusion in the primary XI, and the coaching staff must balance individual merit with the long-term direction being established by head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill.

The playing XI for the first Test has not yet been officially confirmed as of August 13, 2026.
