Hasan Mahmud produced a career-best performance with figures of 6-55 to power Bangladesh to a historic maiden Test win the first Test against Australia in Darwin on Sunday, August 16. The 26-year-old spearheaded a disciplined pace attack as Bangladesh thumped the Aussies by nine wickets, eventually chasing a modest 57-run target. The Aussies were dismissed for a modest 198 before the visitors closed on 96-1, trailing by just 102 runs.

Mahmud's 6-55 marked his country's best Test figures against Australia. The bowler reflected on the team's preparation and mindset heading into the match, emphasising the collective effort that led to the breakthrough performance on the opening day.

"Before the match, in the practice session, we were doing our best every second and believed in ourselves without thinking of the outcome. We got some team plans with the coaches, watching videos, and that's what we did on the ground. The bowlers were patient; they stuck to the line and length. Results came," Mahmud said at the post-match presentation.

The pace bowler also expressed his joy at the historic achievement and what it meant for his nation. Reflecting on the significance of Bangladesh's performance against one of the world's leading Test teams, Mahmud highlighted the pride his country would feel at the breakthrough result.

"They will be very happy for me. My people will be celebrating," Mahmud, also the Player of the Match, added.

Mahmud's career-best performance and Bangladesh's historic position

The performance underlined Bangladesh's growing strength in Test cricket and their ability to compete against established teams on foreign soil. The visitors' first-innings position of 96-1 meant they held a slender advantage as the match progressed beyond the opening day, with the foundation laid by Mahmud's exceptional bowling display.

Meanwhile, the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side has also solidified its position on the fourth spot on the World Test Championship 2025-27 points table. The Bangla Tigers now have three wins in five matches in the ongoing cycle and have a points percentage of 66.67, having accumulated 40 points. The second Test will begin in Mackay on August 22.
