Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. is in the midst of an important summer as he has the possibility of signing a contract extension with the Nets before the 2026-27 NBA season starts. Brooklyn has made it clear that they want Porter with the franchise for the long-term, but an NBA insider doesn't expect him to sign an extension after having a near All-Star season.

NBA insider Jake Fischer said during his livestream on Bleacher Report that he doesn't expect a contract extension for Porter while giving his take on which players could extend their team with their current team. Fischer spoke on Porter, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, Milwaukee Bucks guard Tyler Herro, and Washington Wizards forward Anthony Davis, but he believes that only Curry will sign an extension.

Porter, 28, is coming off a 2025-26 season in which he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from behind the three-point line. Porter is eligible to sign an extension worth four years and $234 million, but there are many around the league who believe that he will not be getting the max amount if he signs an extension with the Nets.

Brian Lewis of the New York Post noted earlier this week that if Brooklyn wanted to add something to his contract, either an extension (with 5% raise or more than two additional seasons) or a restructure, they would have to do so before Tuesday. As of this writing, there hasn't been any reporting of whether either of those actions has been applied to Porter's contract so it seems like he'll be heading into next season as an expiring contract.

Granted, it's possible that Brooklyn could extend Porter at some point between now and the end of next season, but that would be them risking him walking away from the franchise entirely if they do not trade him at February's trade deadline. As it stands, Porter and the Nets could continue their relationship if he remains in Brooklyn past February, but as of now, it seems that Fischer is the latest insider to predict that the sharpshooting forward will not sign an extension.

Jake Fischer says he’s “not expecting an extension for Michael Porter Jr.” No details on whether he’s talking about today’s semi-deadline or long term. Nets have until next July to extend him. MPJ’s agent has said Porter will have “to chart his own course.” https://t.co/rkysB9PtAc
