EAST RUTHERFORD - The New York Giants are back on the practice fields Monday as the attention turns to the second week of the preseason heading toward Saturday's preseason game against the Miami Dolphins.
The Giants and Dolphins will also hold a joint practice on Thursday, which means there will be just two sessions here in New Jersey before the team heads back on the road for South Florida on Wednesday.
The Giants spent the first 12 days of training camp at The Greenbrier Resort some 475 miles away, and Harbaugh believes they came away a better team than when they started. There is still a month from real action when the Dallas Cowboys visit the Meadowlands in Week 1 in prime time on Sunday, Sept. 13.
We have been with the Giants for practice this summer so far and will continue to be your eyes and ears here at NorthJersey.com and The Record, documenting and analyzing every step toward Harbaugh's first season with Big Blue and beyond.
Here's what we're seeing and hearing as the Harbaugh Era continues:
Giants adding another quarterback
The Giants are signing veteran QB Jake Haener, a team source confirmed for NorthJersey.com and The Record, as NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported. Haener had worked out for the Giants last month, and he will now add some competition for Brandon Allen, who has been operating as QB3 behind Jaxson Dart and Jameis Winston.
Allen threw a pair of interceptions in his preseason debut with the Giants on Saturday night.
RB Najee Harris working out for Giants
Former Steelers and Chargers RB Najee Harris is working out for the Giants today, source confirms to NorthJersey.com and The Record. Makes sense as a potential fit with Turbo Miller looking at an extended absence with a groin/abdomen injury suffered Saturday night in the preseason loss to the Vikings.
Harris, 28, suffered an Achilles injury three games into last season and he was off to a strong start for Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers. Their offensive coordinator, Greg Roman, is now a senior assistant with John Harbaugh here with the Giants, and he has heavy influence in the run game. So Harris has been on the radar for a while.
Cam Skattebo looked good in the Giants' preseason opener, as did Tyrone Tracy, although his missed blitz pickup led to the series of events that followed a sack of Jaxson Dart. Devin Singletary has also run the ball well, but given the way the Giants view their running game with power and physicality, adding a veteran running back was always a consideration. We'll see how Harris looks and if the Giants make the move.
