The US Open feels different after the sun goes down. New York stays loud, the stadium fills up, and every point seems to carry more weight. For a first-time visitor, the night session can feel like a lot to absorb.

This is not the quiet tennis experience often shown on TV. Arthur Ashe Stadium turns into one of the biggest sporting stages in the city. Fans sing, shout, celebrate and react to almost every big moment. Matches can stretch well past midnight, too.

Then there is the Honey Deuce. The famous cocktail has become almost as closely linked to the US Open as the tennis itself. It costs plenty, but many fans still consider it part of the trip.

Timing matters as well. The main draw runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 13. Fan Week comes first and offers a cheaper way to experience the grounds.

For a first visit, knowing what lies ahead makes the night much easier to enjoy.

4. Use Fan Week to get more for your money

Fan Week comes before the main draw, running from Aug. 23-29.

That week offers something main draw tickets cannot match. Ground access is free. Fans can watch qualifying matches and open practice sessions. It also gives visitors more chances to see players up close without the pressure of a packed night session.

Fan Week drew 239,307 people in 2025. That was a 10% increase from 2024. More than 240,000 people also signed up for the free Fan Access Pass.

The tournament itself now carries huge financial stakes. Total player compensation has reached an unprecedented $90 million.

Main draw night sessions come at a premium price. Fan Week can help balance the cost of the trip. It also gives first-timers a calmer introduction to the grounds.

Save the money and energy for one big night. Then use Fan Week for the close-up experience.

3. Prepare for matches that can end after midnight

A US Open night session officially starts at 7 p.m. Two matches are scheduled back to back.

That sounds manageable until the first match runs long. A five-set men’s battle can push the second match deep into the night. Long baseline rallies and demanding modern playing styles add even more time.

The tournament has become famous for very late finishes. In 2024, Zheng Qinwen and Donna Vekic played for 2 hours and 50 minutes in the Round of 16. Their match ended at 2:15 a.m. ET, the latest finish for a women’s match in US Open history.

Unlike Wimbledon, the US Open does not use a strict municipal curfew that forces matches to stop early. Matches can continue under the lights.

That means the second match may start much later than expected. Anyone staying until the end should be ready for a very late night.

By 1 a.m., fatigue becomes part of the fun. Fans who remain in the stands share the same strange feeling of being awake while most of New York is asleep.

2. The $23 Honey Deuce is part of the night

The Honey Deuce has become one of the US Open’s biggest traditions.

The cocktail combines Grey Goose vodka, fresh lemonade, Chambord and honeydew melon balls. In 2025, fans bought an incredible 738,459 Honey Deuce cocktails during the tournament.

Each drink costs $23. That pushed total sales close to $17 million.

The number is even more striking when compared with the past. The drink cost $15 in 2015. Its price has increased six times over the past decade, yet demand has continued to rise.

That tells part of the story. Fans are not paying only for a cocktail. The drink has become part of the US Open experience.

The cup matters too. It works as a small souvenir from the night. Walking through the grounds with one in hand has become part of the event’s social side.

So, yes, $23 is a lot for a drink. Still, first-timers may find that the Honey Deuce feels less like a normal purchase and more like part of the ticket to the whole experience.

1. Expect a concert, not a quiet tennis match

Arthur Ashe Stadium can hold roughly 24,000 fans. It is the largest tennis-specific stadium in the world.

That huge crowd changes the feel of the night. When thousands of people react at the same time, the sound travels. The stadium’s massive structure and retractable roof can make the noise feel even more intense.

The scale of the US Open adds to it. Tournament attendance reached a record 1,144,562 fans in 2025. That was a 9% increase from 2024 and marked the second straight year that attendance passed 1 million.

That energy can be surprising during a first visit. Instead of fighting it, settle into it.

The noise, late finishes, packed stands and big-match tension are what make a US Open night feel special. Tennis is still the main event, but New York is part of the show.
