Liam Delap Transfer Latest as Chelsea Seek £40m and Premier League Move Takes Priority

Chelsea are actively reshaping their attacking options this summer, and Liam Delap has emerged as one of the clearest indicators of that process. According to TALKSPORT, the striker has been told he can leave Stamford Bridge and, crucially, “wants to stay in the Premier League” despite interest from Como and the prospect of Champions League football in Italy.

That stance appears significant. Como, now managed by Cesc Fabregas, can offer a high-profile European platform after qualifying for the Champions League through a fourth-place Serie A finish. Yet Delap’s preference points towards a different priority, regular football in England, familiarity with the division, and perhaps the chance to re-establish momentum after a difficult year in west London.

Chelsea transfer plans around Delap

Chelsea are “demanding £40m for Delap”, a figure that would deliver a £10m profit on the £30m they paid Ipswich last summer. From the club’s perspective, that valuation reflects age, homegrown status, and a belief that his difficult first campaign does not erase what he showed before arriving.

Still, the numbers from last season are hard to ignore. Delap “struck just once in the Premier League and twice overall in an injury-hit campaign”, a return that left him unable to build on the promise he showed in 2024/25. Chelsea, now under Xabi Alonso, are trimming a bloated senior group and appear intent on making firm decisions quickly before the September 1 deadline.

The attacking picture has shifted further with the arrival of Danny Welbeck from Brighton, while Joao Pedro remains an important option after a 15-goal season. Emmanuel Emegha has also arrived from Strasbourg, even if his immediate future may involve a move away on a temporary basis. With Nicolas Jackson also linked with a departure, Chelsea are effectively conducting a broader reset in the final third.

Premier League interest and Como setback

For Delap, preference may now dictate the shape of the market. TALKSPORT reports interest from Newcastle and Everton, although neither situation has moved into formal territory. That matters, because if the player is prioritising England, the list of realistic destinations narrows quickly.

As the report states, “this considerably narrows down where he could go next.” It also leaves Chelsea in a familiar transfer position, balancing price expectation with the practical reality of which clubs are both willing and able to proceed.

There is logic to Premier League interest. Delap scored 12 goals for Ipswich in 2024/25, their first season back in the top flight, and that campaign remains the strongest evidence that he can be productive at this level. At 23, there is still a sense that his development is ongoing rather than complete.

Delap future shaped by form and ambition

This next move feels important. Delap needs minutes, trust and a tactical fit that allows him to rediscover the sharpness that persuaded Chelsea to invest in him. He also has an international angle to consider. Having represented England up to under-21 level, he remains outside the senior picture for now, and regular Premier League football would surely give him the best route back into that conversation.

For Chelsea, the message appears straightforward. If an acceptable proposal arrives, they are ready to sanction a sale. For Delap, the message is equally clear, “wants to stay in the Premier League.” In a market where player preference often shapes the final outcome, that may prove the defining detail.

Our View

From a Chelsea supporter’s perspective, this feels like one of those transfers where everyone can still come out of it well. Delap clearly has ability, and there was genuine excitement when he arrived, but sometimes a move simply does not click at the right moment. Injuries, confidence and competition all played their part, and “struck just once in the Premier League and twice overall in an injury-hit campaign” tells its own story.

If Chelsea really can get £40m back, that is smart business. It would give the club room to continue refining the squad under Xabi Alonso and move closer to a group that looks coherent rather than overcrowded. Supporters have spent too long watching Chelsea collect attackers without clear roles, and this summer needs to be about clarity.

There is also something understandable in Delap wanting to remain in England. If he believes he has unfinished business in the Premier League, that mentality should be respected. A club where he starts regularly could easily see the version of Delap that scored 12 league goals for Ipswich.

As fans, there should be no bitterness if he leaves. The hope would be that Chelsea receive a strong fee, Delap finds the right platform, and the squad becomes more balanced. If that happens, this may look less like a failed transfer and more like a sensible correction at the right time.
