Newcastle United has already undergone significant turnover this summer, but further sales remain possible as Matthias Jaissle assesses the squad he inherited from Eddie Howe and determines who does and who does not fit his plans.

One of those decisions will involve veteran winger Jacob Murphy, with Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reporting that Everton remains interested in the Newcastle forward after initially being linked with him earlier in the transfer window.

“Everton remain keen on signing Newcastle winger Jacob Murphy as David Moyes eyes a cut-price deal,” O’Rourke reported.

The renewed update follows previous reports of Everton’s interest in Murphy, including Sky Sports’ Keith Downie linking the Toffees with the 31-year-old earlier this summer. Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness subsequently discussed the possibility of a deal with Football Insider.

Murphy is entering the final year of his Newcastle contract, which expires in 2027, and his contractual situation could allow Everton to land him for a relatively modest fee.

“Murphy, he was linked with Everton very early on in the window, but that interest seems to have cooled a bit, but we know that Everton are still in the market for wide players and Murphy would tick a lot of boxes for them,” O’Rourke reported. “He could be available for relatively cheap due to his contract situation, and he is Premier League proven with lots of experience as well.”

However, there is no indication yet that Murphy is pushing for an exit. In fact, Football Insider’s sources say the winger wants to remain at Newcastle and compete for his place under Jaissle, although Everton is prepared to move if the new head coach decides Murphy can leave.

Murphy recorded four goals and five assists across 46 appearances last season after enjoying an excellent 2024-25 campaign. His role started to face increased competition last year following Anthony Elanga’s arrival, although Newcastle’s summer business to date could give Jaissle another reason to retain experienced members of the squad.

Would you keep Murphy for his experience and squad depth, or should Newcastle cash in with only one year remaining on his contract? Share your thoughts on what you’d do with the winger in the comments section below.
