Newcastle United continues to assess options to strengthen the squad with under two weeks remaining in the transfer window and fewer than 10 days for the Premier League start.

Even though the Magpies already landed a winger in young lad Bouzamana Toure, the club keeps being linked with more wide players following Anthony Gordon’s departure, and their search has apparently taken them back to Spain.

One of Real Betis’ most important attackers is approaching his return from injury in time for the start of the new La Liga season, but according to AS’s Daniel Lagos, Newcastle is closely monitoring Morocco international Abde Ezzalzouli for a potential deal before he rejoins the Spanish side.

That said, according to Lagos, Real Betis has made clear that it wants the 24-year-old to remain in Seville for the upcoming season, where the team will be playing Champions League football for the first time since the 2025/06 season.

“The market is also targeting him,” Lagos reported. “This follows Newcastle’s interest from the Premier League and now with Galatasaray also pursuing him.”

Abde has spent approximately two months sidelined with an injury that prevented him from featuring at the World Cup. He has recently returned to parts of Betis training but was not included in the squad for Saturday’s preseason friendly against Inter Milan because he has yet to regain full match fitness.

Although there’s continent-wide appeal in Abde, Betis doesn’t seem to be interested in sanctioning a sale, although his affordable release clause could leave the Spanish club without options to prevent his exit.

“Betis has been clear so far regarding the situation of their most decisive player,” Lagos reported. “His €60 million release clause marks the limit for any potential departure.”

That clause is worth approximately £52 million, and while that’s not precisely cheap and would make Abde another significant investment should Newcastle decide to turn its interest into a concrete approach, it’s also one that the Magpies shouldn’t have a problem paying if they’re truly convinced Abde is their man.

For now, the Magpies remain more observers than an active party in negotiations for Abde.

Would Abde be worth a major investment for Newcastle at this point, or should the remaining transfer budget be concentrated on improving the midfield and full-back first and foremost? Share your thoughts below.
