Newcastle United has reportedly stepped up its interest in Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller after opening discussions with the Germany international’s representatives. The Magpies, however, have yet to decide whether to submit a formal offer for the 25-year-old.

The Magpies have been linked with Stiller throughout the summer and mostly after Sandro Tonali’s departure, and a new report from Dutchie Bowen claims the midfielder has reemerged as one of the leading candidates to strengthen Newcastle’s midfield before the transfer window closes.

According to Bowen, Manchester United remains interested, creating potential competition if Newcastle decides to move forward. Bowen reports the timing of Newcastle’s interest has become more complicated after a release clause worth around £31 million expired on July 15.

“Until 15 July, Stiller was available through a release clause worth approximately £31 million,” Bowen reported. “That clause has now expired, leaving Stuttgart free to negotiate on their own terms.”

Now, Stuttgart is expected to seek between £35 million and £40 million in a potential sale, forcing Newcastle to reassess whether the midfielder still represents value at that higher price.

“Sources indicate Newcastle have now held initial talks with Stiller’s representatives and formally registered their interest,” Bowen wrote. “At this stage, though, no official bid has been submitted.”

Stiller is coming off a strong campaign with Stuttgart, where he helped the Bundesliga side qualify for the Champions League. He contributed two goals and five assists in 34 Bundesliga appearances last season.

Bowen’s report notes Newcastle is evaluating several midfield targets before deciding whether to advance negotiations for Stiller, so there’s nothing to be too excited about on this front for now.

Stiller has been linked with Newcastle for weeks, but would you still like to see the Magpies make a move now that his price has increased? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!
