Newcastle United Weigh Georges Mikautadze Move as Villarreal Push to Raise Release Clause

Newcastle United are exploring a move for Georges Mikautadze, though Villarreal are working quickly to strengthen their position and make any summer deal significantly more difficult. According to Fichajes, the La Liga side want to increase the Georgia international’s release clause from €60 million to €75 million as interest gathers pace in the closing weeks of the window.

Mikautadze, 25, is understood to be among the attacking options under consideration at St James’ Park. Newcastle are reported to be willing to go as high as €55 million, a sizeable figure and one that underlines the level of admiration for a forward who made an immediate impact in Spain last season.

Villarreal move to protect Mikautadze

Villarreal’s stance is clear. They signed Mikautadze from Lyon in the summer of 2025 for around €31 million fixed, with a further €5 million in add-ons, a deal that ranked among the biggest investments in the club’s history. Just one season later, they appear determined to ensure that any interested side must pay well above that outlay.

The striker is under contract until 30 June 2031, which already gives Villarreal a strong hand. Raising the release clause would add another layer of protection and, from their perspective, help preserve stability in a key attacking position before the market shuts.

That approach is understandable when set against Mikautadze’s first-year numbers. He finished the 2025-26 campaign as Villarreal’s top scorer with 15 goals in all competitions, while also contributing six assists across 42 appearances. Those returns have elevated his standing internally and sharpened outside interest.

Newcastle transfer plans face clear valuation gap

Newcastle’s reported €55 million figure is substantial, but as things stand it falls short of Villarreal’s revised thinking. Even before the proposed clause increase, it would have sat below the existing €60 million benchmark. If the Spanish club complete the paperwork to raise that figure to €75 million, the gap becomes far more pronounced.

For Newcastle, the question is whether Mikautadze is a target worth stretching for late in the window. Recruitment at this stage of the summer often hinges on conviction. If a club believe they have found the right profile, movement can be swift. If there is hesitation, attention usually turns elsewhere.

It is also worth noting that Newcastle are not alone. Barcelona have reportedly made contact with the player’s camp in recent days, with figures between €60 million and €65 million mentioned in connection with a possible deal. That does not automatically mean an agreement is close, but it does reinforce the sense that Villarreal are reacting to genuine market pressure rather than acting speculatively.

Georges Mikautadze profile fits summer demand

Mikautadze’s appeal is not difficult to identify. He has arrived in one of Europe’s major leagues, adapted quickly, produced goals and assists, and done so while entering what should be prime years for a centre-forward. Clubs hunting attacking depth or a starting striker will naturally have him high on their lists.

From Villarreal’s side, the plan is simple. Protect their leading scorer, preserve leverage, and send a message that any club hoping to sign him must meet a premium price. Newcastle may yet decide to test that resolve, but the current direction of travel suggests Villarreal intend to dictate the terms.

Our View

As Newcastle supporters, this is exactly the sort of report that gets the pulse racing. Mikautadze looks like a serious player, productive, sharp, and clearly on the rise after a strong season in Spain. If Matthias Jaissle and the recruitment team genuinely see him as a fit for the system, then you can understand why the club would be tempted to push hard.

That said, Villarreal are playing this well. They know they have a striker whose value is climbing and they are trying to shut the door before bids start to build. From a Newcastle point of view, €55 million already sounds like a major commitment, and if the clause does move to €75 million, the deal becomes a very different conversation.

The exciting part is that Newcastle are being linked with players of this level. It shows ambition and it shows the club are aiming for forwards who can change games, not simply fill out the squad. Mikautadze’s goal record and all-round output suggest he could energise the attack and give supporters someone to believe in straight away.

If the price rockets too high, there has to be discipline. But if Newcastle believe he is the one, fans will be hoping the club keep pressing. This is the kind of signing that feels like a statement, and St James’ Park would absolutely buy into it.
