Newcastle United has spent much of the summer rebuilding their goalkeeping rotation and their midfield, but Matthias Jaissle still needs defensive reinforcements with the Premier League opener against Liverpool rapidly approaching and depth at the back remaining an issue.

A potential opportunity that has been there for weeks on end has now reemerged from Italy, where Newcastle is reportedly among the Premier League clubs interested in AC Milan center back Fikayo Tomori. It’s worth noting that The Athletic, however, refuted the reports on the Magpies’ interest in Tomori at the end of July, so it’s up to you to determine who you believe.

Now, both Quotidiano Sportivo’s Luca Mignani and talkSPORT are reporting that the 28-year-old is increasingly likely to leave Milan before the transfer deadline, with the Serie A side having made him available.

“Now the main suspect in packing his bags is Fikayo Tomori: he was on the bench for the entire match against Chelsea, tied to the club until next June, with no renewal in sight,” Mignani reported.

“AC Milan have reportedly made Fikayo Tomori available for sale ahead of the final weeks of the transfer window,” talkSPORT reported. “Tomori is currently heading into his seventh season at San Siro having first joined on loan from boyhood club Chelsea in January 2021.”

Tomori did not play at all during Milan’s 3-0 preseason defeat against his former club Chelsea, despite new head coach Ruben Amorim making extensive changes during the game.

More importantly for Newcastle, Mignani reports that several English clubs have already registered interest in bringing the former Chelsea defender back to the Premier League, including Newcastle.

“The Premier League has come knocking (Coventry, Newcastle, Liverpool): now it’s time to make a move,” Mignani reported.

No offer from Newcastle is reported at this stage, meaning the Magpies’ interest, if it’s there at all, has yet to develop into a concrete bid. Liverpool and Coventry City are also named as interested clubs, potentially creating competition should Newcastle decide to proceed with a bid.

Tomori joined Milan permanently from Chelsea for £25 million (approximately €29 million) in 2021 after initially arriving on loan, and he has since made more than 200 appearances for the Italian club while helping it win Serie A.

What is true is that Milan’s situation could provide an opening for the Magpies. Tomori is entering the final year of his contract and, according to Mignani, there is currently no renewal in sight. On top of that, the Rossoneri also need to reduce an oversized squad that currently features a monster, 44-player group.

Mignani’s report does not provide Milan’s current asking price, so it remains unclear what Newcastle would have to pay to turn its interest into a transfer. His estimated transfer value sits at a reasonable €13.3 million.

With Newcastle searching for full-back help, would you bring Tomori back to the Premier League, or should Newcastle reserve its remaining resources for a different full-back and the midfield? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
