Former NFL star Cam Newton will be the featured speaker for Virginia State University's Trojan freshman pinning ceremony. Newton is a college football national champion, NFL Most Valuable Player and media personality. His role on campus will take place during the ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 14 at the Multi-Purpose Center. The ceremony marks a signifcant milestone for VSU's freshman students as they begin their journey as Trojans. Newton led Auburn University to the 2010 BCS National Championship before embarking on an accomplished 11-year NFL career. He was named the Most Valuable Player in 2015 following a standout season with the Carolina Panthers.

The pinning ceremony culminates a week of freshman integration activities designed to help incoming first-year students transition successfully to life at VSU. Throughout the week, students participate in programming focused on campus life, academic responsibilities, traditions and protocols, campus safety and expectations. The pinning ceremony marks the students' official welcome into the VSU community and reinforces the VSU's commitment to preparing students for greater academic, social and professional success. In addition to Newton, VSU President Makola M. Abdullah and VSU faculty, staff and students will be in attendance.
