The NFL season is in the first round of preseason contests across the league. The quest for Super Bowl LXI is less than six months away, and it will all begin with the Seattle Seahawks hanging their Super Bowl LX banner.

In sports media, there is often a fine line between broadcasting duties and upholding the integrity of the sport. The NFL has addressed this relationship in recent years and appears to be making another decision. Like Tom Brady, who is a partial owner of the Las Vegas Raiders and works for FOX, Troy Aikman will now be subject to certain restrictions.

Multiple reports indicate that Aikman, who recently accepted a role as a consultant for the Miami Dolphins, will have certain restrictions. This, of course, is related to his role as a Monday Night Football commentator. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy released a statement assuring that there are no issues with this type of relationship between broadcasters and their roles with other franchises.

“There have been no issues with Tom over the last two seasons. It is up to the coaches and clubs what they share with him. If they share information they shouldn’t, then that’s on them. The same parameters that pertained to Tom last season will continue this year and also will apply to Troy.” McCarthy said via Front Office Sports.

What type of restrictions will Aikman have?

According to reports, Aikman will have to attend production meetings with teams remotely. He will also be barred from attending practices at team facilities. It feels a bit extreme, but the NFL doesn’t want to invite any type of speculation surrounding the arrangement.

Production meetings can provide broadcasters with valuable access to information that isn’t always available to the public. Coaches and players can discuss game plans, personnel decisions, injuries, tendencies and other team-specific information that could give someone an advantage if it reached the wrong person.

The same applies to practices. Aikman could potentially observe how the Dolphins prepare, which players are receiving certain opportunities or how the team approaches specific situations. Even if Aikman has no intention of using that information during a broadcast, the league has to consider the appearance of a conflict.

The NFL is ultimately erring on the side of caution. By keeping Aikman away from team facilities and conducting production meetings remotely, the league can maintain a clear separation between his responsibilities with the Dolphins and his duties with ESPN.

While the restrictions may seem excessive, they give the NFL a straightforward way to protect the integrity of its broadcasts while allowing Aikman to maintain his new role with Miami.
