NHL fans hit with brutal reality ahead of new season

There was a time when catching your favorite NHL team play meant simply flipping on the television. Those days feel like ancient history. In the current landscape, following every game of an 84-game regular season has become a complicated, expensive scavenger hunt. Depending on your location and the team you support, you might need a combination of Sportsnet+, Amazon Prime, regional broadcast networks, or NHL Centre Ice just to keep up. And even after subscribing to multiple platforms, blackout restrictions can still block you from watching. I mean the post put out there by Hockey Patrol is clear. The price tag for all of this is climbing, too. Sportsnet+ Premium currently runs $42.99 per month or $324.99 for a full year. Starting in September, those rates are set to jump to $44.99 monthly or $344.99 annually. That premium tier unlocks access to more than 1,100 additional NHL games, which sounds comprehensive on paper. But here is the catch. Even that top-tier subscription does not guarantee access to every local game. Regional broadcasting rights remain separate from the national package, meaning fans in certain markets could pay for the most expensive option available and still find themselves locked out of their own team's matchups on any given night.

That disconnect sits at the heart of the growing frustration among hockey fans. It is entirely possible to invest hundreds of dollars across multiple services and still end up scrambling to figure out where a game is airing. The nightly question of "Where is the game tonight?" has become a running joke in the hockey community, but for many supporters it is genuinely exhausting. The sentiment gaining traction online is straightforward. Fans want a single subscription that covers their team, all 84 games, with zero blackouts. No juggling apps. No cross-referencing broadcast schedules. No surprise regional restrictions after already paying a premium. Whether the NHL and its broadcast partners will ever move toward that kind of simplified model remains to be seen. Rights deals are lucrative and complex, and the current patchwork of regional and national agreements shows no immediate signs of consolidation. Hhockey fans heading into next season should brace themselves for another year of subscription stacking and last-minute Googling just to watch the sport they love.
