Curt Cignetti has already transformed Indiana into one of college football's most surprising powers, and after leading the Hoosiers to their first national championship, he will now try to prove the program can remain among the nation's elite.

Standing in the way of Indiana's Big Ten opener will be Northwestern.

The Wildcats will travel to Bloomington on Friday, Sept. 25, for their first road game of the 2026 season. The matchup will kick off at 7 p.m. CT at Memorial Stadium and air nationally on FOX as part of the network's College Football Friday series.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26, before being moved to Friday night.

Both teams will have only six days to prepare for the matchup after playing the previous Saturday, with Indiana hosting Western Kentucky and Northwestern hosting Colorado. That creates an immediate challenge for the Wildcats.

Northwestern is walking into one of the toughest environments and matchups it could face early in the season, but Indiana isn't entering 2026 with the exact same roster that lifted the national championship trophy.

Indiana Has Plenty to Replace

Fernando Mendoza is no longer in Bloomington.

The quarterback who led Indiana to a perfect 16-0 season, won the Heisman Trophy and captured the national championship was selected No. 1 overall by the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2026 NFL Draft. Mendoza finished his championship season with 3,535 passing yards, 41 touchdowns and just six interceptions.

His departure would be difficult for any program to overcome. Indiana also saw six offensive players selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, including Mendoza, while eight Hoosiers overall heard their names called.

Yet Cignetti has already shown he understands how to rebuild a roster in the modern college football landscape.

The Hoosiers turned to the transfer portal once again, bringing in former TCU quarterback Josh Hoover to take over under center. Hoover brings plenty of experience and production to Bloomington.

In 2025, he threw for 3,472 yards and 29 touchdowns in 12 games for TCU. He also threw 13 interceptions, showing the aggressive style that can make him both a dangerous playmaker and a quarterback Northwestern's defense will need to pressure.

The bigger question is whether Cignetti can do with Hoover what he did with Mendoza.

Mendoza arrived at Indiana after three seasons at Cal and became a national superstar in one year under Cignetti. Now, Hoover gets the opportunity to see whether that same development can happen for him.

Indiana will also have to replace its top two running backs from last season after Roman Hemby and Kaelon Black exhausted their eligibility. That doesn't mean the Hoosiers will suddenly become one-dimensional.

Khobie Martin returns after rushing for more than 500 yards and six touchdowns last season, giving Indiana an experienced option in the backfield.

The Hoosiers also added Boston College transfer Turbo Richard, who rushed for 749 yards and nine touchdowns last season while adding 30 receptions for 213 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Richard's versatility could make him especially valuable in an offense that will be looking to help its new quarterback.

Indiana's backfield may look different, but there is still enough talent to make it a major concern for Northwestern.

Key Matchup: Northwestern’s Defense vs. Indiana’s New-Look Offense

That brings us to what could be the biggest matchup of the night. Northwestern's defense against Indiana's new-look offense.

The Wildcats established themselves as one of the nation's better scoring defenses in 2025, allowing just 19.8 points per game and ranking 23rd nationally.

Now, they will have an early opportunity to show that success wasn't a one-year occurrence.

Going into Bloomington against the defending national champion will require Northwestern's defense to establish its physicality immediately.

Robert Fitzgerald will once again be one of the leaders of the unit, while defensive coordinator Tim McGarigle enters his third season running the defense. This is exactly the type of game where Northwestern's veterans need to set the tone.

Hoover has the arm talent to make defenses pay, while Indiana has enough talent at running back to prevent Northwestern from simply focusing on the passing game. The Wildcats will need to tackle well, limit explosive plays and force Indiana to earn every yard.

If Northwestern can make Indiana uncomfortable early, the game could become much more competitive than the national championship label might suggest.

Chip Kelly Could Be Northwestern's X-Factor

While Kelly won't be on the field, his influence could have a major impact on this game.

Northwestern enters 2026 with Kelly taking over as offensive coordinator, and the Wildcats will be learning how to operate his system under pressure for the first time in Big Ten play.

The Indiana game could be particularly important for Kelly's development within the program.

By the third game of the season, Northwestern should have a better understanding of what its players do best and which concepts are working.

If Kelly is comfortable with his personnel and trusts his players to execute, his play-calling could help the Wildcats stay aggressive against an Indiana defense that will be looking to control the game.

A strong offensive game plan could also take pressure off Northwestern's defense.

If Aidan Chiles wins the quarterback competition and can settle into Kelly's offense, the Wildcats will need to find ways to keep the chains moving, establish the run and create explosive plays through Griffin Wilde and the rest of the receiving corps.

The goal shouldn't be to turn the game into a shootout. It should be to make Indiana work for every possession while giving Northwestern enough offensive production to stay within striking distance.

A Statement Opportunity for Northwestern

This will be one of the toughest games on Northwestern's 2026 schedule, and it arrives almost immediately.

The Wildcats will host South Dakota State and Colorado before traveling to Bloomington. Then, after Indiana, Northwestern will return home to open the new Ryan Field against Penn State on Oct. 2.

That makes the Indiana game an important early measuring stick. Northwestern doesn't need to walk into Memorial Stadium and prove it is already on Indiana's level.

But it does need to show that last season's defensive success can carry over and that the new-look offense can compete against one of the Big Ten's best programs.

Indiana has lost its Heisman-winning quarterback and several major contributors, but Cignetti has already shown he can reload.

Northwestern has its own new pieces, including Kelly and potentially Chiles, and now gets the opportunity to see how quickly those pieces can come together.

For the Wildcats, this is more than just their first road game. It is an early chance to prove they belong in the conversation with the Big Ten's top programs.

And if Northwestern can establish its physical identity on defense, get enough from its new-look offense and make Indiana uncomfortable early, Friday night in Bloomington could become one of the most intriguing games of the Wildcats' season.
