Kip Lewis has a soft spot for Star Wars, and he’s not shy about it.
People told him the movies were too long. He ignored them, dove in, and came out the other side owning Darth Vader, Mandalorian, and jet pilot helmets like a proper nerd.
Respect.
“I was just in total awe of… the fact that somebody could be so creative with everything, the way they talk, lightsaber sounds, the whole shebang, and so I love it,” Lewis said.
“It's a fun little hobby, man.”
He prefers the prequels over the originals and the sequels, which already tells you he’s willing to die on certain hills. His favorite is “Revenge of the Sith,” and the character he connects with most is Anakin Skywalker. Not because he’s planning to wipe out a room full of younglings after a tough loss to Texas, but because the story hits close to home.
On the field, Lewis flips a switch. The calm guy who collects helmets turns into a different animal once the lights come on. He plays angry, physical, and nonstop. That’s the Anakin-to-Vader transformation, minus the heavy breathing and the betrayal of the Jedi Order. Lewis just sees red and tries to ruin offensive game plans for four quarters.
The deeper connection is the chip on the shoulder. Anakin spent years being told he was special while also being held at arm’s length. Too old to train at first. Then good enough to fight wars but not fully trusted by the Jedi Council. He kept producing and still felt overlooked. Lewis sees some of that in his own career.
Over the past two seasons he’s put up 141 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, and four sacks. He returned interceptions for touchdowns against Auburn and Alabama. He’s made the Butkus and Nagurski watch lists. He’s been one of the more consistent and violent linebackers on Brent Venables’ defense.
And yet the big individual awards and constant national shine haven’t really followed.
That sits with him.
“I don't really get recognized nationally, so I kind of make that my effort now, to let them know it's kind of a little BS that I sometimes get overlooked,” Lewis said.
“So it's always going to have that chip over my shoulder, in every technique I do. Just coverage wise, blitz wise, pass-rush wise, fitting wise. Just making me want to bring my A-game all the time.”
There it is. The Jedi Council never fully embraced Anakin.
The national media hasn’t fully embraced Lewis the way he thinks the tape deserves. So he’s walking into his final season ready to make it everyone’s problem. That’s healthier than turning to the dark side, and it’s a lot better for Oklahoma’s defense.
The fun part is how well the comparison works without being forced. Lewis isn’t out here quoting the Sith Code or building a red lightsaber in the facility. He’s just a movie guy who saw a powerful, slightly slighted character and thought, “Yeah, I get that.”
The difference is Lewis channels it into tackling people in the backfield instead of Force-choking admirals.
It also fits the way he plays. There’s a controlled violence to his game that feels a little Anakin-ish once he gets going. He doesn’t need the helmet on to transform. The whistle blows and the hobby-loving film buff disappears for a few hours. Opposing ball carriers probably wish he’d stuck to collecting memorabilia instead.
Lewis is in a good spot for this final year.
He’s experienced, productive, and carrying that extra edge from feeling under-recognized. Whether the national awards catch up or not, the mentality is already there. He’s not waiting for permission to play like one of the better linebackers in the conference. He’s just going to keep showing up and letting the tape do the talking.
So yes, Oklahoma’s star linebacker is out here relating to Anakin Skywalker, collecting Star Wars helmets, and using a sense of being overlooked as fuel.
It’s weirdly perfect.
Just don’t expect him to declare “I am the Senate” after a big third-down stop. A loud “Boomer” will do fine.
The Force, or at least a really good swim move, is strong with this one.
